I’ve read that first time expectant mothers over 35 should not fly, but I can’t find a reason why? I have a trip (no flight booked yet) planned for when I’ll be 24 weeks pregnant. It’s a 3-4 hour flight…I’m really torn…. any helpful articles or thoughts that explain the risks when over 35 welcome!

I'd guess at increase chance of pre term labour, and labour complications, combined with statistically risker pregnancy.

Having had a pre term birth I certainly wouldn't want to be abroad.

I'm 42, 20 weeks pregnant and have flown several times and plan to in a months time. I wouldn't fly after 28 weeks personally but others do.

Flying while pregnant
Air travel is generally safe if you're having an uncomplicated pregnancy. If you have any pregnancy complications, check with your midwife or GP that there's no medical reason to stop you flying, such as high blood pressure or a risk of deep vein thrombosis.25 Jan 2023

I flew several times while pregnant at 35 - a 5/6 hour flight.

All pregnant women are at increased risk of clotting so just make sure you're very well hydrated and move around a lot on the flight.

I always take Omega-3 throughout pregnancy too.

I was 36, 26 weeks pregnant with my first and only DC, and flew 11 hours to give birth in another country. All went fine, all I needed was a letter from the GP to state how far along I was to give it to the airline.

I flew plenty when pregnant over the age of 35. My obstetrician never once mentioned age being an increased risk factor. I did wear flight socks as recommended though.

Are you confusing it with not flying after 35 weeks. I did long haul when 12 wks aged 40. My GP said it was safe and I would probably benefit from the two weeks lazing in the sun.
If you intend to fly after 35 wks pregnancy you will probably be refused by the airline and your insurance won’t cover you. It’s really important to check that your insurance covers you at any stage of pregnancy.
