When does bad morning sickness become HG?

Hi all I’ve been hit with morning sickness badly for the past 10 days. I can’t keep much down and over the last two days I haven’t been able to keep water down. Today has been the worse - everything that has gone in has come back up.

Thankfully I’m off work for another two weeks as I’m a teacher but I’m really struggling to look after my toddler and do day to day housework. Luckily hubby is off for the next few days.

I might ring the GP tomorrow and ask for some cyclizine but during my first pregnancy they were reluctant to give me any even though I was vomiting several times a day and just told me it comes with the package of pregnancy.

Just out of curiosity, at what point does is turn into HG?

That is already HG. But also, vomiting doesnt come with the package and your GP was incredibly dismissive and rude.

You can get cyclizine even if you only get mild nausea. You should already be on it. Even worse than malnutrition, you are facing dehydration.
Call 111 TODAY.

It's awful, isn't it. I was admitted when I'd not kept anything, even water, down for three days. I'd got terrible dehydration and spent a day on a drip. I didn't bother with the gp, I called the EPU.

Tulipvase · 20/08/2023 19:57

Agree, EPU or your MW.

LashesZ · 20/08/2023 20:01

HG is defined by dehydration from not keeping anything down. Go to EPU - they see the HG ladies all the time and are mega sympathetic. They'll sort you out with some meds.
Pregnancy sickness (whether HG or just severe) shouldn't be at a level where you can't keep anything down.

abbs1 · 20/08/2023 20:12

OP as others have said EPU tomorrow or call your midwife. You need fluids ASAP and your urine checked for ketones. I would even say A and E tonight if youve not held water down the last 12 hours. They need to get you on some anti sickness ASAP most likely something stronger than cyclizine. I was on IV ondansatron, metoclopromide and IV steroids as well as daily IV fluids for months in hospital with my first baby due to HG as I couldn't keep water down. 2nd baby GP put me straight on xonvea at 5 weeks pregnant and it was amazing and I never had to go into hospital once for hg.
If EPU can't see you, you need to go to A and E for fluids and medication. I had to do it multiple times on weekends when EPU was shut. Dehydration in pregnancy is extremely dangerous. If you want more support definitely join the hyperemesis support page on here. It was a lifeline for me in both pregnancies. I hope you're OK.

abbs1 · 20/08/2023 20:15

Just re read your post. You need A and E tonight if you've not held water down for 2 days. I was told if I couldn't for 12 hours iv fluids are needed ASAP as its dangerous for you and even more for baby. Are you passing urine at all?

WeWereInParis · 20/08/2023 20:30

See a different GP if they still refuse the cyclizine. I had it in both pregnancies with sickness not as bad as yours.

If you can't keep down water, I'd be insisting on something. And calling back in a couple of days if the cyclizine isn't sufficient.

Hi all thank you all so much for you replies. I think I need to ignore the tone of my GP when I spoke to him a few years ago who made me feel like I was overreacting and speak to the EPU tomorrow. @abbs1 yes I’m still urinating thankfully but I think I need to make note of how many times - it’s definitely less than usual and darker. I’m the sort of person who normally has to go to the loo several times after one drink of water and that’s deffo not the case at the mo. Im trying to sip water instead of large volumes.

@SuperSange apart from not keeping anything down and lack of urinating are there any other symptoms of dehydration I should look out for?

Thank you again 😊

My GP tried that with me and I didn't know any better. Eventually he agreed to dip my urine just to humour me - then his face fell and he asked if I could make my own way to the hospital or if he needed to call an ambulance 😯

With my second pregnancy I called and said it was the same as the first time and they prescribed over the phone 🙂

If cyclizine doesn't help, go back and ask for other options. There are several and sometimes you need a couple at once.

For me the nausea was more debilitating day to day than the sickness... Particularly when trying to look after other children ( and I did it 4 times 🤷)

elliejjtiny · 20/08/2023 20:46

I'm so sorry. Some Drs are really mean when it comes to anti sickness meds. I lost 3 stone and had 2+ ketones and I just got told off for "not eating properly" . I know it's hard when you feel so awful but please keep trying until you get someone who understands and gives you meds.

PeaceGoodMercutio · 20/08/2023 20:50

Hope you get this sorted, it is an awful illness.
I tried all the anti sickness medications for HG and ondansetron was by far the best.

Definitely ignore the GP. I had this first time round and told to meet up with friends for coffee to take my mind off it or eat chocolate. I was like I can't hold a sip of water down for 5mins. Refused to give any medication. Ended up going to EPU who said I looked like death dipped my urine which was 4++ ketones and immediately put me on a drip and injection of ondansatron and did a prescription for home. Never saw that GP again. Thankfully another GP was very understanding and kept prescribing my meds that the hospital had given me so 2nd pregnancy said here it is and thankyou for educating him on HG from first pregnancy no issues with prescribing it.

I hope EPU can help you and give you some relief. As others have said you may need a couple meds at once. Make sure you set alarms and take it through the night. That Definitely helped. HG is horrendous and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I hope your symptoms improve soon 🫂🫂

Ignore your GP! Go to A&E. I. The meantime please try and get some fluids in - even if you just melt ice cubes or ice lollies on your mouth.

CD1987 · 20/08/2023 21:34

Thank you, you have all been so kind and helpful with your posts and I’m sorry you’ve been through it as well. I think it’s one of those things that unless you have experienced it, it’s hard to understand just how awful it is. Being told off for not eating properly is utterly useless. That’s the whole bloody issue 🥴.

The worst thing about all of this is, it could be all for nothing. I had a scan last week that dated me two weeks earlier than I was expecting and there was no heartbeat present yet. I have a follow up scan later this week to see if it’s viable and will hopefully date me at 7/8 weeks. I was going to hold out until then to speak to someone about the sickness but there’s no point in suffering for another few days if there are plenty of options out there.

@CD1987 I would recommend the pregnancy sickness support helpline or their available information, it’s so useful. They have been far more knowledgeable than my gp. I am week 15 and been being sick many times daily since week 6 however have been able to avoid dehydration with ice lollies. Despite being sick all day and bedridden I don’t have HG because I’ve not lost enough weight but I would say even pregnancy sickness is on a spectrum which at one end can be very hard to manage. Again, pregnancy sickness support can help you figure it out so you feel you can confidently advocate for yourself and get what you need from the gp. It sounds like you need fluids. Good luck and take care of yourself
