Confused about false positives?

I'm 10DPO. Yesterday I took 2 Clear Blue tests and both had faint positive. I felt happy but then read online they're notorious for giving false positives? I went out and bought a boots and Tesco test.L and tested them with first wee this morning. Both came back negative. I then tried my clear blue again (as I have a whole pack). Again another faint blue line.... i don't know if they're all false positives?

Was the clearblue positive within the time frame? And was the other pregnancy tests an early detection one? These look like a positive to me and not an evaporation line.

CR7 · 20/08/2023 10:37

@ElizRoz92 providing you follow ALL the instructions branded tests are great.

Evaporation lines form after the time limit.

Wishing you lots of luck x

These came up within a minute of taking the test

@ElizRoz92 great news! Mine were very quick also x

I wouldn’t trust these tests at all! They’re notorious for false positives and shouldn’t allowed to be sold. However I do think the line has a thickness and some colour to it which is a good sign especially if it came up within the time limit. Were the pink dye tests just as sensitive? You’re still really early days so I’d probs wait a day or two and test again with pink dye. Lots of luck!

The tesco tests are a 25miu sensitivity and I believe these clear blue ones are 10, so more likely to pick up the early positive. Unsure on the boots one. The books early result are brilliant and I'd highly recommend checking with that! Got everything crossed for you.

Yeah the boots and Tesco ones were not labelled as early response. And instructions say to use from missed period so that could be it!

Ah sounds like just the normal boots ones then which are also 25. I got a positive on a 10 at day 10 then a positive on a 25 on day 12. Good luck!

Hi, exactly same boat here. Got this faint line on clear blue but negative on tesco 25mu one

Mine came up with a faint line within about 1 minute of testing, so it’s unlikely it’s an evap. Still stressed though as they are notoriously bad for evap lines and how the 25mu tesco one came back negative this morning!

I've just checked the box for the boots and Tesco one and another commenter was correct in that they require 25ml of HCG to register a positive whereas these clear blue ones only need 10ml. We might just be too early for the others! Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

They're not false positives so much as evaporation lines that look really real. If it was clear and appeared in the timeframe in the right place it's probably real.

They are also bad for dye runs hence making sure the line looked normal and was in right place.

OTOH chemical pregnancies are very common and often present as a singular positive test at 9/10/11 dpo followed by negative tests and your period at its normal time or slightly late.

These tests have 1 simple job to do! 🙈

I agree! We might just be a little bit too early for the others! I will update you as soon/if I get a positive on a 25ml. I think you’ll get one a little quicker as your line is darker than mine! X

Alyosha · 20/08/2023 12:17

Yeah, and the blue ones aren't good at it, I recommend a pink dye test

wavecatcher · 20/08/2023 12:24

Pink dye tests are the most reliable, get a first response

hopefulmum46 · 20/08/2023 12:24

I had a false positive on one of the blue dye clear blue ones and the line definitely came up within the time frame. I'd try a First Response or Easy@Home, I've found them much more reliable, done loads of testing with them and never had an incorrect result, they're very sensitive as well.

Mammma91 · 20/08/2023 12:26

Op I had a very similar test and now in hospital on an 8 week pregnancy (sickness related, but don’t worry I’m just poor at being pregnant 😂). Tescos one £3.50 own brand are fab, I used them when I found out I was pregnant with my son 5 years ago and again this time it confirmed it after clear blue. Could you try a cheaper brand test?

Alyosha · 20/08/2023 13:01

False positives are often chemical pregnancies though if the line was clear, normal, came in the timeframe etc. But yes, blue tests are notorious for evaps that happen really quickly, dye runs etc. Etc.
