Transverse at 38+2

So I had my 38 week midwife appointment today and she felt baby was transverse lie, sent for a scan and confirmed. I then waited for 2 hours to speak to a doctor but had to leave to pick up my other children so I have an appointment on Monday to discuss the options.

Baby was breech at 32 week scan and head down at 36 weeks so I’m assuming they’ve got plenty of room left since they’ve moved in the last 2 weeks.

Midwife seemed to think they would do a c-section next week but surely there’s time for baby to move? Both DS were normal vaginal delivery after 40 weeks so hoping to avoid CS if possible.

I’m aware of cord prolapse risk so it’s making me a little nervous. Anyone been in a similar position and can offer some advice?

My sister thought her baby was transverse at a similar gestation and the midwives did too, but in the end once she had a scan the baby was head down just with arms /legs in a really odd place. I remember my sister talking about the risks (she’s a doctor) because as you say there is a risk of cord prolapse and it can be dangerous if you go into labour naturally. This is why they normally do a c section for these babies - it’s the safest option. So yes I guess the baby could move, but they’ll want to do a c section before there is a risk of you going into labour naturally. Worth saying that if you do go into labour while baby is still in transverse position you should call 999 because of the risks. Good luck, I hope everything goes well for you x

Thanks for your reply. It’s really interesting to see how different trusts have different procedures. My SIL was transverse her whole pregnancy and they didn’t do ELCS until 39 weeks.
I will request another scan on Monday before the appointment because baby has definitely been moving positions since yesterday and will specifically ask about the location of the cord.
There’s a big part of me that just thinks baby will go head down when they are ready for labour so I would like to wait to go into labour naturally. Also I’m not prepared to do that if it’s causing unnecessary risk to me or baby.
I suppose I’ll get some clarification at the appointment and fingers crossed baby will have turned beforehand!
