Baby aspirin safe?

Hi all,

Im currently 4+3, and had a chemical in February and a miscarriage in June at 6+3. This time around I've done lots of reading and started taking 75mg of baby aspirin every evening since 1 day after ovulation.

I wont be seeing a midwife until sometime between 6-8 weeks, possibly later, and now Im starting to second guess myself😖 Is it safe to take this given that no doctor has actually recommended it to me? Im also very hesitant to stop it after the last 2 previous losses. And I wonder if the doctors will be annoyed that Im taking it without any doctors advice when I finally do get to see them....Aaaagh!! Grateful for any opinions!!

I am taking 75mg baby aspirin although i was recommended it by my doctor so its definitely not harmful. Ive been taking since BFP and told to take to 36 weeks i think

Sagittarius25 · 17/08/2023 13:41

I take 150mg daily as instructed by doctors/midwife due to a low hormone level, which they prescribe aspirin for, so it's defo not harmful.

However I wouldn't be taking any (or any medication) in pregnancy without it being prescribed to me.

mumtotwox · 17/08/2023 13:48

Echoing the others, I've been prescribed 150mg by my midwife due to previous high BP in both pregnancies and PPH with my second. I wouldn't take it without being advised though x

@idebtiy because I have had 2 losses this year and it seems to be recommended for recurrent loss-- the doctor who scanned me after my last miscarriage also mentioned this but wont give me an appointment until 6-8 weeks, so I was worried that I could potentially have another loss before then.

Thank you @Flowerlover010 , @Sagittarius25 and @mumtotwox, thats reasurring and yes I will check with my doctor about this.

So clinically it's been proven to reduce the rate of late term miscarriages (13-23 weeks) for those who have had them before, it's unproven in helping early miscarriages. I'm always cautious of taking medication that isn't prescribed, I'd advise talking to a medical professional about it.

I'm taking 150mg aspirin daily as this is an ivf pregnancy

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends low-dose aspirin (75–150 mg once daily from 12 weeks) for pregnant women at high risk of pre-eclampsia.

Don't take it without checking first. xx

anotheranotheranotheranother · 17/08/2023 14:04

I think you need to call your GP tbh.

And don't take any more aspirin

Twimum23 · 17/08/2023 14:33

I took 150g aspirin from 8weeks up till my twins were born helps keep the blood thin dose not do any harm and the doctors prescribed it aswell

Mushroo · 17/08/2023 14:37

I’ve been prescribed it by my midwife due to a risk of pre-eclampsia, but I was advised to only start taking it from 12 weeks.

I don’t think it’s risky before that per se, it just seems there’s no evidence it does anything helpful before they point either.

I also took aspirin 75 mg without being prescribed from the day of my frozen embryo transfer. (I had been prescribed it in a previous successful ivf round with a diff clinic due to recurrent implantation failure) I mentioned that I had been taking it to my new ivf consultant when I got my bfp and he was not at all bothered and said I may as well continue taking it. Then my midwife told me to take 150 mg from 12 weeks as I'm over 40 which I've been doing - now 20 weeks. So basically pretty sure it'll be fine but maybe just check with your gp/midwife.

Thanks all for your advice, I really appreciate it. I rang my GP and she said it would be up to the consultant/early pregnancy unit and didnt really offer an opinion. I rang the early pregnancy unit and they said check with your GP🤯 they did however offer me a scan and to meet with a consultant at 7 weeks which is good, Im just unsure about what to do in the meantime. The lady from the EPAU said they have lots of women on aspirin and didnt think it could do any harm, that was the extent of her advice.

Hello, I had low papp-a during my pregnancy and was prescribed baby aspirin. Baby was born safely and healthy. At my GP post birth check up, the GP advised I should start taking aspirin as soon as I know I'm pregnant if I have a second child. He literally said, you can just buy it in the shop.
I know it's not the same situation but the GPs don't seem concerned.

Hi, I had 4 miscarriages in a row, was seen by RMC had all the tests done everything came back normal, so they advised as soon as i got a faint positive next time to start on 150mg aspirin every evening & progesterone morning & evening, I did this & had a successful, perfect pregnancy & gave birth to a healthy baby girl 😊
