Medical/surgical miscarriage management

I had a missed miscarriage 3 weeks ago. I did expectant management but my scan today showed retained pregnancy tissue. The doctor told me after expectant management, the chances of medical management working are only 5% compared to 90% if I went for a MVA. I decided to go for the MVA next week but wondering if it was the right choice now. In both cases, I have to take the misoprostol so will have the side effects. Just wondering if anybody else has been in the same position?

Hey, with my 14 week MMC in Jan I opted for the surgical instantly as I wanted it over and done with however they couldn't book me in for 5 days, in which time I began to miscarry on my own. I had some retained products, i think she said around 3-4 clots varying in size. The misprosotal (4 orally) got the rest out within about 4 hours. I then just had a small amount of retained blood that came out with my next period. I never needed surgical in the end thankfully.

Everyone is different tho, my sister had expectant management, medical and then still needed surgical as it didn't do much for her x

@Ttcmumma did the medical not work after your sister's natural then? X

@Rolo08 unfortunately not, she advised me not to do medical because of her experience but I thought it would be worth a try and worked fine for me. My sister was 6 weeks, I was 14 weeks x

I know a lot of people choose medical but the doctor saying it only has a 5% chance of working after natural put me off x

All doctors advise differently, mine tried her best to sway me away from surgical due to the risks of scarring that can cause issues with future pregnancies and it being an all-round more intrusive experience. She's the reason I ended up trying the medical after natural even tho I wanted surgical to get it over with. In the long run I'm glad I did try the medical, it was a more natural process for my body when it couldn't get it all out on its own

Also I forgot to say, I'm so sorry for your loss, it's the worst experience x

@Ttcmumma thank you lovely, and I'm sorry for yours too. I just don't know what to do atm x

I completely understand, it's the world's worst rollercoaster to be on! I have a 5 year old so my goal was always whatever got me home to him quickest. Probably not the best approach as the medical happened very fast and my partner had to hide him from it all while I hid in the bathroom! They do allow you to stay in hospital for it, I just stupidly wanted to go home. Even the surgery tho to be fair, they say if you go in early you will be home within a couple hours too. It's a horrible feeling but give yourself a day or two to process if needs be x

I've had 2 missed miscarriages (the last about 5 weeks ago), had surgical management both times. I didn't want to wait and see, and I wanted as low a risk as possible of extending how long it took to get back to normal. There are of course risks and side effects to surgical management but overall they are low and the procedure is a very simple one. Being under general anaesthetic didn't worry me either as I'd had surgery before (and had another since, so 4 times under general now!).

When I've had the surgery you have a pessary to help soften the cervix, but this is done an hour or so before surgery so you don't have any specific side effects that you'll feel from the medication. Recovery from surgery is quick too. I was in at 7am, home by 3pm, no cramping by the next day and only light spotting for a couple of weeks afterwards. I just got my period back 4 1/2 weeks after surgery day.
