Staying with my mum post c section

I'm booked in for a c section next week and as I live in a pretty rural area with no friends or family within 1hr 30 mins I'm planning on going to stay with my mum who can take care of me and my dog whilst I recover etc. I'm going to be a single parent so no help or input from baby's father and I have a tiny 2 bed bungalow so it will be too cramped with 2 adults, 1 baby and 3 dogs !!! What happens with post c section check ups etc am I expected to go to hospital in the days after a c section or do you get visits from a midwife etc ? I'll be over an hour from the hospital I'm having the procedure at when at my mums whereas it's about 40 mins from my actual home

I had midwife check at day 1,5,and 10 from when I was discharged from the hospital. They came to me (because my husband went back to work and I couldn’t drive due to the surgery).

I don’t know how that will work, you should talk to your midwife. If they won’t travel that far does your mum drive, could she take you to a community centre appointment, or agree to meet the midwife at your bungalow if you can get there as a middle point? Or if not maybe a local midwife service will be able to check on you? Not sure really.

Good luck with everything, and it’s a good idea to have someone else around during those first few weeks/months until you are recovered.

Oh, I had the same thing. Just let the midwife in hospital know that you will be going to stay at your mums and they will arrange for the midwives local to your mum to visit you for your check ups. When you go back home they will transfer your care back. The only thing that they couldn't sort out was for the health visitor to see me at my mums but she just said to call when I was back and she saw me then.

@Cotswoldlife90
Sorry should have said, i had my baby in one borough of London but was going to be staying at my Mum's in another borough of London, the hospital just notified that borough. Hopefully the hospital can do the same for you xx

I have a tiny two bed cottage too, and a dog (I know you’ve got three!), but it was fine with my DH and mum around to help after my c section. My baby was born with a small problem that needed further investigation, so we needed to take her back to the hospital on day 3. Then the midwives came to us. And then we had to take her in again, (unrelated to her specific problem).

I would strongly recommend getting your mum to help at your house, with the aim of setting you up and settling you and baby in, if at all poss. Best of luck to you.

This happened to me. DH was taken ill so I stayed with my mum for a week. The hospital just informed the local hospital to my mum and the midwives came from there.

I was a single mum and had a C-section I stayed home alone as had no ones house to go to, all visits were at home.

Twimum23 · 16/08/2023 08:53

I stayed in hospital for two days after mine and babies had to be in nicu for two weeks so they said to me I could have my check in hospital when my brought me up to see the babies so had 5 and 10 day check then was discharged fully after day 10

Hufflepods · 16/08/2023 09:00

There will be no extra appointments due to the c section, but there will be several early appointments for the baby. Usually the midwives come out to you on day 3, on day 5 and 10 you need to attend a weight clinic for them, and more often if they aren't gaining appropriately.

Caspianberg · 16/08/2023 09:03

I would also get your mum to come to yours. Easier as then you will have everything baby related, can set up high changing area at home, dogs used to it.
With Ds we had Midwife visit several times in first 2 weeks, Ds had to go back for hearing check day 3 to hospital as they didn’t do before discharge. Also had to sort registration documents and go to town hall etc about a week old
