A friend brought her Doppler to try , I'm not sure if it's the heartbeat or something else. Does this sound like the heartbeat? I'm new to all this

I’m no expert but I think it could be your HR that you’ve picked up. They’re still super tiny at 10 weeks so it can be really hard to find them, the midwife struggled finding my baby at 16 weeks

Sunshineclouds11 · 15/08/2023 14:04

I'm not going to listen to it as it's not good for people who aren't trained to advise on this.

MW don't tend to listen for the heartbeat until 16 weeks.

You could be picking up the babies, your heartbeat or the placenta.

Don't use home Doppler.

You don't know how to use it properly.

You will mostly be hearing your own heartbeat and not baby. It can fool you into thinking everything is Ok.

Your midwife/health visitor will check for heartbeat at an appointment

Hiya! No judgement or anything but I know it's advised not to use a home Doppler system.

Reason being is that unless you are trained to use it, it's likely that you might be picking up your heart or something else and gaining false comfort from it

Please be careful, particularly when later on and if you use it to check reduced movements!

It’s really advised not to use those, I can’t see what you’ll gain and surely causes stress. If you have concerns, speak to your midwife.

Thank you, it's not something we plan on using as she took it home with her, it was just as a bonding experience

No. At 10 weeks your baby is still enclosed in the pelvis and you won't be able to pick it uo with a doppler.

What you are hearing will your arterial blood pumping.

An experienced midwife will be able to pick up a fetal heart rate from 14-16 weeks onwards.

allgoodthings84 · 15/08/2023 14:16

I’m pretty sure that wasn’t a heartbeat. Definitely didn’t sound like either of my babies heartbeats (or mine).

1of2 · 15/08/2023 14:18

That’s not your babies heartbeat. It sounds like it’s either yours, or the placenta. Babies HR will be well over 120 and it’s too early to listen in with a Doppler anyway.
As said above, please don’t use a home doppler. They are so unsafe.

Spottypineapple · 15/08/2023 15:00

For context, a student midwife was trying to find mine at my 28 week appointment. I wondered what was taking so long as I could clearly hear the heart beat...until she actually found it and the difference in sound was so tiny I wouldn't have noticed. That's why it really does take a specially trained ear to do it.

CheeseandGherkins · 15/08/2023 15:09

The main sound wasn't the heartbeat and it was impossible to hear anything else with the loud voices talking constantly.

CR7 · 15/08/2023 21:35

That's definitely yours. The baby will have a much faster heart beat x
