Sumatriptan in pregnancy

I’m 9.5wks pregnant and suffer with migraines normally but they’ve been torture during my 1st trimester (2nd baby, weren’t this bad with my 1st).

Nothing will stop them, all my old techniques don’t work! So I’ve had to take my sumatriptan, 6 in total over the course of a month. My doctor allowed me another prescription to take in a worst case scenario and the midwives I saw yesterday said I should be fine, given that there’s no guidance that they’re NOT safe… obviously not enough research.

My question is, has anyone taken the same amount or more than me during pregnancy and baby been fine? I obviously don’t find out for a while if I’ve done any harm and I’m getting slightly worried :(

Thanks in advance!

id Ring a pharmacy that’s open and ask to speak to the pharmacist for some advice they will know all about what you can take etc

I like this website for looking into medications in pregnancy, especially as they're not typically well researched as usually avoided. This site links any relevant studies but looks like sumatriptan doesn't have a massive amount of evidence to say if definitely okay or not so it's difficult to make a recommendation really. Can have a read at least.

I'm 28 weeks pregnant and had to take sumatriptan several times in the first 20 weeks as I couldn't cope with the bad migraines.

All was well at the 20 week scan and my migraines have improved significantly since then too. I hope they do for you as well Flowers

Thank you so much for your response, it’s very reassuring.
I think in total with my first I only took 3-4 so now I’ve taken nearly double, it does panic me.
But thank you for easing my worries :) hope you remain migraine free for the rest of your pregnancy!

@NoUsername1001 - how have you got on with your migraines now? I’m 18 weeks pregnant and had to take probably around 10 sumatriptan so far this pregnancy. That feels like far too many but I already have 2 DC and work full time and I just can’t cope with a migraine on top! I’ve got another creeping on now and I’ve tried everything to avoid taking it again (as I already took 50mg yesterday which worked for a time and now it’s back). Just wondering how you have got on since August? Xxx

@HappyHolidays22 I’m so sorry to hear you’re struggling! They’re horrific at the best of times but during pregnancy, I cannot.
They actually stopped for me around 21 weeks, I haven’t had one since (27 weeks). Baby has had all checks and seems absolutely fine, kicking me every chance they get, it’s just my pelvis that’s struggling now.
I recall one of my last migraines I had my feet dipped in really hot water and an ice pack on my head, it slowly subsided over the course of the evening - another non-sumatriptan suggestion.
I really hope they subside for you soon xx

If the medical professionals said they are ok I wouldn't worry but you can actually take up to 300mg in 24 hours in normal circumstances if they aren't for the same attack which would be 6 50mg tablets so I would t worry about 6 in a month if the doctor and midwife signed off on them.
