Hi everyone - I am just hoping for abit of advice I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with my first baby.
I have noticed today that babies movements are a lot more frequent than usual. They have felt strong and almost constantly for the past few hours.
is this normal or should I rang my midwife?
thanks 😊

Midwife. Now.

ncedforthisprofessionalquestion · 13/08/2023 21:55

Yes, don't even hesitate.

Call your midwife now. Any change in movement needs checking out.

Im sure all is fine but ring now, don’t wait until tomorrow.

CelticPromise · 13/08/2023 21:55

Midwife here. We would want to hear from you. All is likely fine but a change in movements should be checked out.

Summermeadowflowers · 13/08/2023 21:57

Erm … why midwife now? In no way trying to be difficult but while a reduction in movement is a worry and should be checked I am not aware of any alarming nature of a baby becoming more active.

It can be a sign of impending labour but impending can mean tomorrow or in 3 weeks. Or have you had anything like coke or sweets? I had Fanta limon at 35 weeks and DD went a bit bananas!

It can be a sign of distress. But any change in movement needs looking at, you should do more research into this for yourself if you are pregnant.

bagforlifeamnesty · 13/08/2023 21:59

@Summermeadowflowers it can be a sign of fetal distress. Some people report an increase in movements and baby being born with cord around the neck etc

PensionPuzzle · 13/08/2023 22:02

@Summermeadowflowers there are fairly recent research papers that cover the potential causes of increased movement that come from harm. I won't link as don't want to panic OP (I'd go in for reassurance but be fairly confident that it was going to be an uneventful trip) but that is why they say any change in movements should be checked, not just any reduction in movements.

PickledScrump · 13/08/2023 22:03

Definitely get checked. Could be that maybe is in a position where you can feel more than usual, but any change in movement should always be checked out whether that is a reduction or an increase

Summermeadowflowers · 13/08/2023 22:06

That’s handy to know, @PensionPuzzle , thank you. I’m sure all is fine OP but good to get checked Flowers

100% call the midwife, or triage at your maternity unit.
As above said don’t wait.
You are important and they’ll be keen to hear from you that’s why they’re there.

xx

Thankyou everyone.
I have contacted my maternity assessment centre. They told me increased movements aren’t something that usually would cause alarm. They have asked me to monitor over the next few hours and if I still feel concerned to call back or go in.

I would go in now - hope all ok, but much better to have a proper check in person.
