Anxious about weight gain 10 weeks pregnant, anyone felt the same?

My BMI was 20 prior to pregnancy (51kg) I'm at week 10 now and have already gained 2.5kg. I'm surprised as I've cut out my evening bottle of wine, staying active and eating healthy.

I know it's a good sign , but I just don't want to put on too much weight. Does anyone else feel the same ?

Hmmm. A lot of that will be baby weight. Your uterus has doubled in size and you are carrying a fetus. Perfectly normal.

Twins? Only saying as my friend almost immediately put weight on and her 1st scan at 12 weeks confirmed twins

Thank you for the reassurance

Twins is a rather scary thought

I wish I hadn't worried about my weight during pregnancy. I ate healthily and walked almost every day. Gained 30 pounds by the end, lost 45 pounds by 10 days postpartum. Turns out I was holding on to a lot of extra fluid. If you're eating healthy then the weight gain could easily just be bloat.

Stop weighing yourself.

I got weighed at my first midwife appointment and that’s it.

Keep active, try and eat healthy (it gets hard later on when youre craving carbs) and don’t eat for two.

It’s only 9 months, you have your whole post baby life to lose anything you gain, if you want to.

I gained weight quickly in my first trimester on both of my pregnancies. It steadied out after. As long as you are healthy and active and the MW isn't concerned, then you shouldn't be.

Yeah I think a lot of it must be bloating right now , my breasts are a couple of cup sizes bigger and my stomach looks very bloated

I will stop weighing myself and just be weighed when I see the midwife

Definitely stop weighing yourself.

It is normal and healthy to gain 10-12.5kg during pregnancy.

Your uterus is growing rapidly, amniotic fluid, breasts etc.

I was 49kg when I became pregnant with DS and only gained 4kg.

Just keep eating a balanced diet and you'll be absolutely fine. It's so normal!

EarringsandLipstick · 11/08/2023 21:54

Why on earth would you worry about 2.5 kg weight gain? That's only 5.5 lb.

As long as you are eating sensibly, and keeping active / exercising, all weight gain is attributable to the pregnancy & will be lost easily afterwards (relatively easily!)

It's absolutely normal to put on some weight quickly - often that's fat deposits around your bum & hips, and increase in boob size.

It tends to plateau & then increase at certain points.

I gained about 2 stone each pregnancy. A little less on pregnancy 2 & 3.
But with my first baby, I hit 37 weeks and weight seemed to pile on - that puffy face look. I thought I looked great but I really didn't in retrospect.

However, I lost most of the weight at birth, and each pregnancy was back at pre-pregnancy weight in 2 weeks. I know that luck, and not the same for everyone. My body obviously wasn't back to normal.

I'm only saying that because I think most weight gain / loss during & after pregnancy is out of our control (again once you are eating healthily & keeping active).

I haven’t weighed myself since getting pregnant but OMG the first trimester bloat was real! Definitely calms down once
you get into second trimester! Don’t worry about it at all. You’ll hopefully feel better in a few weeks. I felt like such a whale.

Un7breakable · 11/08/2023 23:18

I'm 12 weeks and have put on over 3 kg. I think it's because I'm eating more snacks and not excercising. I'm a little worried but midwife isn't.

I wouldn't worry. They will mention it if they are concerned.

Mummy08m · 11/08/2023 23:23

I was 50kg before my first pregnancy and put on nearly 20kg. It was nearly all fluid retention! I lost the vast majority of it in the first few weeks, it was like popping a water balloon, I had to sleep on a towel to soak up the night sweats.

I'm glad you've decided to stop weighing yourself - I say this as someone who had an eating disorder many years ago so I do get it. I was weighing myself every week in my first pregnancy and checking against pregnancy weight gain charts and I was soaring above the recommended weight gain line. Madness in hindsight, it wasn't fat, it was just liquid! Now I'm pg again I don't think I've weighed myself in months, I know I'll just sweat it all out again eventually!
