How many scans are you planning to have/had?

As the title says, just wondering how many scans everyone’s thinking to get or had so far?

  1. My first was a private one (found out I was 12+5)
  2. NHS (15+5)
  3. Private reassurance/gender scan tomorrow (should be 17+4)
  4. Then have my NHS 20 week scan booked when I should be 19+2

Not sure what will happen after that in terms of scans as it seems to say that’s the last one (NHS wise) unless something’s wrong. But yeah, just interested to know how many scans most people have! I’ve planned the private ones more for reassurance due to having a MMC found at 12 week scan previously, so I guess I get quite paranoid this pregnancy in terms of something going wrong and not knowing.

First baby I had:

6 weeks in EPU due to bleed
12 weeks
20 weeks

Second baby:

8 weeks in EPU due to bleeding
12 weeks
20 weeks
23 weeks due to being assaulted by a patient
32 weeks growth scan due to suspected polyhydramnios (didn't have it)
37 weeks growth scan due to reduced movements (no concerns)

It seems very varied! Thanks for answering everyone. What a nerve wracking time it is being pregnant, though it’s quite comforting to know that so many other women will share the nerves of scans x

I think I had 4 for each child 🤔
2 private and 2 NHS

I had identical twins a year after a twin neonatal death at 24 weeks.. Second set of twins share a placenta and i had threatened prem labour lts of times. Was really high risk and in and out of hospital (NHS) Scan wise I had.
8w (check was nt having multiples...and I was)
12w
14w
16w
18w
20w
22w
24w
24.5w- prem labour scare had treatment.
26w
28w
30w
32w
Born at 35w..now 10 and happy and healthy

I wouldn't have had them all if I wasn't ao high risk. It was pretty nerve-wracking. Also after about 28w they just looked like a bundle of limbs so not a good photo op!

When I was pregnant, it was standard to have two scans: one at 16 weeks and one at 20 I think.

For both my pregnancies I paid for a Nuchal translucency scan at 12-13 weeks. I gather that is offered as standard these days but it wasn't then.

With my first I also had a scan at 8 weeks but that was just because I had been bleeding quite heavily and they wanted to check everything was ok, which it fortunately was.

10 weeks 5 days

36 weeks
38 weeks

DC1: 12 standard, 20 standard (x3), 28 growth, 32 growth, 36 standard but also growth. All NHS.

DC2: Somewhere between 8-10 weeks reassurance scan. I work in obstetrics, and a kind registrar took helped me out. 12 standard, 20 standard (x2 - still didn't get everything), 36 standard, 37 position scan (x2 - once to confirm no longer breech, other was a pre-induction scan to check position), 37+5 bedside position scan before emergency C-section.

DS1 went in for 12 week scan, he was 20 weeks so then had a growth scan at 24 weeks.

DS2 standard 12 and 20 week scans.

My trust does three as standard. The 36 week one is not to check head position as PP said but to measure blood flow through the placenta and to prompt intervention to bring forward birth if any ossues are identified. It is to prevent still births.

I don't get what someone said about paying for extra ones because the NHS ones weren't "magical". I only saw them as a medical procedure. I wasn't there for an enjoyable experience.

This time round we've had:

6 weeks - at EPAS for bleeding.
8 weeks - private because the EPAS scan put me impossibly behind for dates, baby was measuring correctly at this scan.
10 weeks - for private NIPT, scan is included.
12 weeks - dating scan
14 weeks - preterm clinic which is a quick look at baby and cervical length measurement.
16 weeks - private to confirm sex and so our older children could attend.
17 weeks - preterm clinic.

Now 17+2 and have scans booked in on Badger Notes for

19 weeks - preterm clinic
19+2 weeks - Anomaly '20 week' scan
21 weeks - preterm clinic
23 weeks - preterm clinic
25 weeks - preterm clinic
32 weeks - serial growth scans due to start Nov 7th, I think these will be 2 weekly from here but not 100%.

Last time I had
8 weeks- private early scan
12 week- dating scan
20 week-
Then a 2 growth scans and one for reduced movements I think.

I think your comment about the head down position was aimed at my comment but my trust press release literally says it is to check for breech position? Confusedhttps://www.sgul.ac.uk/news/extra-pregnancy-scan-slashes-number-of-breech-births-and-risk-to-babies

Maybe its for different or multiple purposes in different trusts?

Extra pregnancy scan slashes number of breech births and risk to babies

Adding a third routine scan at the end of pregnancy can slash the number of unexpected breech births by 70% and the risks of the baby being born with severe health complications.
