Did anyone else still have a low lying placenta at 21 wks?

Never had this with DD1 and just found out at 2owk scan expecting DD2 but I have a low lying placenta. I know everyone has different experiences from more severe to the placenta being 'a late mover', but I would like your take on it, what it can really mean?

I had this in my 2nd pg. The sonographer told me that the bottom bit of the uterus is the last bit to stretch so I would be rescanned at 36 weeks to make sure it had moved. Sure enough it had.

Have you been told they will scan again later on in your pg?

Frizbe · 27/02/2008 20:45

I had this with dd1 and by 36 weeks it had shifted, didn't have the same with dd2. I think the majority of time it shifts, but best to read up on the subject just in case it results in a csect. Hope it moves for you.

I had low lying placenta the whole pregnancy and mine didn't move but they will scan you later on. I had scans at 32 and 36 weeks.

pollyblue · 27/02/2008 23:14

I was told at 20 weeks i had a low placenta and was booked for another scan at 34 weeks to see if it had moved. I started bleeding badly at 32 weeks, was scanned then and it hadn't moved - ended up having a c-section at 37 weeks. In most cases it will move so don't worry too much - if later scans show it's still low the docs will discuss the best way of proceeding, not always a c-section, it depends just how close to your cervix it is.

VirginiaWoolf · 27/02/2008 23:16

I had this both times at 20 week scan, and both times it had shifted by 36 week scan - was told it was very common.

I had grade 4 too but luckily no bleeding and great c section at 37 weeks.

Pollyanna · 28/02/2008 13:05

I think 90% move by 36 weeks. I had one at 20 weeks, and it was still very low at 32 weeks - I was told that it was grade 3 and really unlikely to move. However, I was scanned on Monday (at 36 weeks) and it has moved all the way out of the way!

It is easier said than done, but don't worry yet, and don't google!! I spent weeks planning a cs (because my consultant told me that was what I should prepare for) and now feel that I have been worrying needlessly for weeks.

Hi Sketchi - I had this and am having my 36 week scan this afternoon to check out if it has moved. Fingers crossed!

If like me you like to do research on these things then there is a document written by RCOG listing clinical guidelines for treatment here. If not, then here's my summary based on the reading I've done on it!

  1. if you have a low-lying placenta at 20 weeks there's only about a 10% chance it will stay there. It is more likely to stay there if the cervix is covered or partially covered at 20 weeks - if the placenta is just close to edge of cervix (within a couple of cm) it is much more likely to move. Did your scan show where placenta was in relation to cervix? You should ask this.

  2. you should be offered an extra scan if the placenta is within a couple of cm of cervix. If they haven't done this then demand one. I believe this takes place at 32-34 weeks if placenta was covering part or all of cervix at 20 weeks, otherwise it is at 36 weeks if it was just close to edge of cervix (like me)

  3. If you are one of the 10% of people where it is still low-lying then you will need a C-Section and may be hospitalised early if you have any bleeding.

For the majority of people with this at 20 weeks, the 36 week scan is all you need and it confirms that the placenta has moved. The only other thing you need to bear in mind is that if you have any bleeding (bright red) in the meantime then you must get to hospital asap to get it checked over and let them know your placenta was low lying at 20 weeks.

Hope that helps!

MerlinsBeard · 28/02/2008 13:11

I had this. In fact i was told it was so severe that it wouldn't move. It has and is very high. Am 37 weeks today. Was scanned at 32 to check things over.

carmenelectra · 28/02/2008 13:17

I did and i mithered like hell about it! Thankfully it was fine i think at 28 wk scan.

Think staistics show that 90% end up being well out of way by delivery.

I was just so worried cos really didnt want cs and i just though that i have no control over this. At least with brecch a baby can move or you can have ECV!

i REALLY WOULDNT WORRY! Even though ive just said all that! At 20wks its no big deal

wildwind · 28/02/2008 17:13

Just replying to wish you all the best. Sure it's difficult to worry through the next weeks, but hopefully the experience of most women here will be repeated (it shifts). Will keep fingers crossed for you.

Was just told at 12 weeks that placenta is low - and placenta previa may be on the cards, but hoping it shifts later.

Just happy tp be pregnant again after two miscariages, no children and now hoping for the best.

Be strong and hope it will be ok for you,

HolidaysQueen · 28/02/2008 18:58

Just to reassure you - I'm another of the people whose placenta has moved sufficiently since 20 week scan. Just got back from hospital and they are happy for me to go for a natural birth. Hope all these stories are reassuring you sketchi

Rolf · 28/02/2008 19:32

I've had this at 20 weeks in 2 pregnancies and both times it has moved.

I'm now 26 weeks pregnant and my placenta was low at 20 weeks, so I'm being re-scanned at 32 weeks.

As everyone else says, in the vast majority of cases the placenta ends up in a safe spot

Paranoid1stTimer · 28/02/2008 19:39

Hi

I guess you have plenty of info from these posts but I thought I would just add my for extra support. I also had a low lying placenta which MW did say "not placenta praevia" just low lying and they expected it to move up. I had bad bleeding at 18 weeks which was when they noticed it followed by further bleeding a few weeks later when the uterus had stretched quite a lot in a short time. I was obviously terrified but a further scan showed the placenta had actually come away at the cervix so now I am almost 38 weeks and all set for a natural birth.

I hope you get on ok and hopefully it will just works its way up so you won't have any probs.

littlefrog · 28/02/2008 19:41

yes was fine, they rescanned at 27 weeks.
The sonographer wrote down that it was fine because it was '3mm from os' which kind of surprised me (seemed pretty close to me!) but the midwife said it must have just been a mistake and meant 3cm! Anyway was all fine, natural birth at home. Good luck!

Sketchi · 29/02/2008 21:30

Thank you all for all the kind and heartfelt messages they were all really helpful and have helped put my mind at ease, especially at the possibility of having a CS!

I do have another scan booked for 34 weeks, so fingers crossed.

Good luck with all your pregnancies and the little bundle of joys you have to look forward to. I'm glad I found this site as everyone is so friendly and helpful, it really can make a difference to someones pregnancy with people like yourselves answering questions. X

All the postings i have read have reassured me so much. I am 13 weeks + and was told at my scan this week that i have low lying placenta, i have been bleeding on and off albeit lightly since around 6 weeks, and have been worrying myself sick, has anyone else with L.L.P.experienced orangey/pinky light bleeding/spotting too ??
Leenie..
