Help, I’m in hemorrhoids misery

Hi everyone,
I’m 32 weeks pregnant and in the past week I’ve had a really painful hemorrhoid appear :( As if being heavily pregnant wasn’t hard enough, I’m thoroughly miserable! I can’t sit, walk, lie down, wee or anything without being in pain. I also have a toddler so need to look after her too. I honestly think I’m crying for around 50% of the day, I honestly don’t know how I’m going to get through this.

Germoloid cream sometimes seems to ease the pain temporarily but not always. Ice also seems to help, but again only temporarily by numbing the area. I’ve tried witch Hazel, sitz bath, another cream, I’m taking stool softeners (which is helping with going to the toilet) and have a donut pillow but nothing seems to be helping, if anything it’s getting bigger. I’ve tried to look in the mirror at it, I don’t think it’s thrombosed (hats off to anyone who deals with that!!)

I’m seeing my nurse later this week but wanted to hear from others personal experiences. Am I doomed to have this until I give birth? Has anyone successfully had their’s clear up prior? What did you do?? I actually need to have a c section this time which will be hard enough recovering from, I’m now worried I’ll still have this pain too which is going to make life 10 x harder.

Any help or advice would be great.

I feel your pain. I had horrific haemorrhoids with my twin pregnancy - in fact they were thrombosed and I had surgery at 34 weeks pregnant to remove them Shock Incredible amount of pain.

The one crumb of comfort I can give you is that they got much better once the babies were born and that pressure was gone.

AutumnVibes · 07/08/2023 21:08

I’ve got them now at 32 weeks in my third pregnancy and had them during my second. They got worse towards the end and better (slowly) after birth. I would say the c-section is good news as I’m pretty sure mine were caused by the pushing in my first labour when I think I traumatised by entire bum. Have you not got anything prescribed like Anusol? That could help and is easy enough to get hold of. The only thing I would say is to maybe not try to be heroic about it, take time off sick if you can/if it helps, ask your partner to do anything they can, try to avoid lifting the toddler wherever possible and just get the weight off it whenever and however possible. Good luck and I feel your pain.

I'm 35 weeks and I've had 3 hemorroids out for about 3 weeks now. What helped me is a quick daily massage with Aquaphor after my morning shower. Also using unscented wipes instead of paper, and shower with a fragrance free hydrating gel (I use Aveeno). If I'm not too tired before bedtime I soak a cotton disk with witch hazel and leave it for a couple of minutes then reapply aquaphor for the night. I've found this also helps the stool pass faster and more easily. The hemorroids are still there but they don't hurt anymore and they are much less inflamed. I don't think they'll be gone for the rest of the pregnancy but at least they don't bother me. Hope it helps...

Sugar helps.

Apply it to the haemorrhoid for 15 mins, use granulated sugar it works better, it absorbs the water in the prolapse and shrinks it

sounds insane but I'm a dr and we use this all the time on prolapsed stomas.

Fluffyrug191 · 07/08/2023 21:46

I feel your pain my kids are older now but I have a recurring external haemorrhoid that likes to thrombose about every 3 months. It looks about the size of a pea but goes rock hard and feels like I've been kicked in my arse hole for a week at a time. Ask doctor to prescribe you some topical local anaesthetic like emla x

JessicaPeach · 07/08/2023 21:47

Ask the dr to prescribe you scheriproct ointment and suppositories. Life changing!

Northernsoul72 · 07/08/2023 21:52

Oh goodness, I do feel for you. I'm not currently pregnant but I was in hospital about a year ago with a beast of a thrombosed one. I would keep up with the ice as much as you can, I was advised 20 mins on, 20 off. I was addicted to a haemorrhoid FB group at the time and many people suggested donuts were a no no and can put more pressure on the area. Many suggested a soft regular pillow. Good luck x

Oh I feel for you, I had an infected one in early pregnancy & the pain was absolutely awful! Anusol worked for me and cleared them up within a few days. Hope you feel better soon

Thank you everyone for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate it. I've taken each and every bit of your advice on board, and I'm sorry some of you are also suffering :(

@CoachBeardsJane - Wow, I'd not heard of this before, do I literally just put the sugar all over it? Definitely off to buy some granulated sugar this morning!!

@Fluffyrug191 You poor thing!! I actually have some Emla at home, didn't cross my mind it could help here! Thank you. It's safe in pregnancy right? The NHS website says lidocaine is so assume it is :)

Yep been there it's horrendous isn't it.
I also used the numbing cream mentioned above I think I ended up getting some numbing vagisil that worked. I also drunk orange juice or prune juice, I drunk a tablespoon of flax and linseeds mixed in water every day, drunk loads of water and bought a cooling gel pack called "happy nunny" which you can put in fridge is good for after birth too
Hope it eases up but it will go away after you've had the baby

autumnboys · 08/08/2023 05:29

The cream never helped me, but anusol suppositories were great. Sorry you’re suffering so badly with them, I hope your midwife can suggest something.

I 100% second this. Don't wait for the nurse appointment or midwife. Call the GP and get these today. I developed piles at 36 weeks pregnant and was in so much pain plus unbelievably anxious as I was to be induced at 37 weeks and was terrified at the state they'd be in after labour. Within 36 hours using these they had significantly reduced and I continued using up until two days post labour - by then they'd gone despite having pushed my DD out. Over the counter stuff is nowhere near as good.

Yep just cover it in loads of sugar and leave it for 15 mins then wash it off and it should either shrink or be able to be pushed back into the back passage

georges1878 · 09/08/2023 06:49

Thank you everyone!!!

For anyone who also is suffering, I tried the Emla cream, so far it's been the most successful in reducing the pain out of everything I've tried (although unfortunately not pain free), and obviously it only numbs and doesn't do anything to help shrink it. I'd recommend giving it a go! I'll be trying sugar too, I've researched it and it's recommended by lots of people too!

Off to see my doctor today to hopefully get something stronger like a few of you recommended.

Thanks again :)

For anyone who looks at this post in the future for help... it turned out my hemorrhoid was thrombosed, hence the intense pain! Whilst of course I wasn't happy, at least it explained why it was so painful and I knew that it would get better, which it did.

Pain for me subsided 11 days after the initial onset. The 11 days were rough, with a peak at around 5ish days for me. I was prescribed cathejell which is a numbing gel which massively helped and told to ice regularly throughout the day as this encourages the blood clot to dissolve or something. Now I still have the hemorrhoid but there is no pain and it is smaller.

Hang in there! It does get better!

Hi, I'm 32+3 and woke up today with a hemorrhoid and omg the pain is unreal.
I've never suffered with them in past pregnancies and they were all big babies.
Thanks for posting all the recommendations I'm going to use them all! Desperate times 😭
