Next 2 me or cot for newborn?

First-time mum here a bit confused about the best sleeping arrangement for our baby.

We are going to do room-sharing for safety (and also space) reasons for as long as possible. Moses baskets are out of the picture because I am going to have a c-section but when it comes to next 2 me cribs and cots, do I need both? or can we use a cot from day 1?

With the bedside cribs, I like the idea of seeing the baby through the mesh and from our bed level, but if we use a cot and put it next to our bed, wouldn't it be the same?

If next 2 me cribs are really essential, are there ones that can be used beyond 6 months? I guess I am still trying to get my head around buying something that will only lasts for 6 months.

I loved our next to me crib, actual cots are much larger and bulky and it was so useful to be able to roll over and grab baby in the night for a breastfeed than have to get out of bed and reach into a cot.
We borrowed a Next to me from a friend but would have just got one on fb marketplace and bought a new mattress if we hadn't had that option. They keep their resale value really well.
I don't think you'd get one that fits baby much longer than 6/7m and by that time you might be happy for bub to be moving into their own room

I didn't start using the next to me for a few weeks anyway as baby was in with me. When I moved her into it it wasn't really 'next to me' anymore but a foot or so away from the bed so no different than a basket. I think people so find them really useful though if your baby is happy to sleep away from you! (Mine was not!)

LuckyMoonstone · 06/08/2023 22:41

I would definitely recommend a next2me crib. Leave the side down, and the baby is literally just right there and you don’t have to leave your own bed at all to tend to it- reach a hand out to soothe/stroke it, pop a dummy back in if it has one, tuck blankets back in, much easier to lift baby in & out when they are at the same level as you on the bed. There are lots of things you will buy for a baby and only use for a limited amount of time, doesn’t make them any less useful. Keep it for future children or sell it.

Sorry I mean no different from a cot. Although our cot is much larger and wouldn't have fit in our bedroom so it also depends on space. The main thing is a cot would involve you getting up every time you needed to get baby whereas a beside me bed you could just reach over

I bought a second hand next to me and it was a total waste of money. I've had 2 babies and neither slept in the cot both ended up sleeping in my bed. Come to think of it it's probably me 😅

LeopardLover · 06/08/2023 22:48

My son slept on me for 8 weeks, then eventually went into his next to me. The Snuzpod is amazing and you can find them everywhere secondhand.

He stayed in it until he was just over 6 months when we switched to an IKEA cot and hacked it so it only had 3 sides and is like a big next to me!

He never slept in a moses basket, ever 😅

TropicalTrama · 06/08/2023 22:49

Moses baskets are out of the picture because I am going to have a c-section
Why? I’ve had 2 c sections and no issue with the moses basket. Anything you attach to your side of the bed ie a next to me I would imagine to be problematic post recovery though. As it happened though both of mine preferred the big cot.

fatboypenguin · 06/08/2023 22:54

We had a Moses, next to me and a big cot. We used the Moses for downstairs sleeping, and the next to me for upstairs, however, it ended up being on my husbands side, as because I had a c section, I found the positioning of it made it difficult for me to get out of bed for the bathroom etc.
Once I recovered, I found it invaluable to be able to comfort baby without having to get out of bed or move much. I'd wake in the night to see her little head snoozing away (in 2 hour increments mind 😂).

NatGee · 06/08/2023 22:54

We got a second hand snuzpod and think itll be a really good arrangement so everyone gets to sleep comfortably
We also got a moses basket for free that we'll use downstairs and a will get an ikea cot for when baby is ready to move to the nursery
Not sure how a csection impacts on your baby's sleeping arrangements: picking baby up from a moses basket will be no different from a next to me or a normal cot, if thats what you mean?

Businessflake · 06/08/2023 22:56

It’s way more difficult to get out of bed with a next to me crib by the side after a c section. I’ve had two c sections and went straight to cot at the end of the bed both times. They didn’t sleep in it for weeks but they wouldn’t sleep anywhere but on me.

My advice would be start with a cot. If they are still not going down in the cot after a month or so get a next to me crib.

NatGee · 06/08/2023 23:58

@Businessflake I see, that makes sense, so a next to me is probably not the best if one's had a csection

Mummy2823 · 07/08/2023 10:18

We have a next to me and I also had a C-section.
Because of difficulties getting in and out of bed the cot is attached to my partners side of the bed rather than mine but we love being able to see and interact with her from our bed

FoodFann · 07/08/2023 10:23

I had a c section and a Moses basket was fine. She then went up to her big girl cot at 3 weeks. Best of luck to you

LoveBluey · 07/08/2023 12:06

I had a c section and used a moses basket. Both of my girls stayed in the moses basket until 5 / 6 months and then straight in to their big cots in their own rooms.
They were both fairly small babies though so others could outgrow them sooner.

The Chicco Next2Me Forever lasts until 4 years. We got it after a snuzpod which was great but baby got too big by 6 months. If I'd have known about the Next2Me Forever beforehand. I'd have used that from day 1.

hippygirllucky · 07/08/2023 12:09

We had a next to me but she wouldn't settle so slept in the pram carry cot for the first month of her life (it was smaller), then a Moses basket and then the next 2 me. She would pull herself up by 6 months so we got a space saving cot in our bedroom. You'll probably need more than one sleeping option for the long haul if you're going for extended in-room sleeping.

Saying that, chicco do a next 2 me that converts into a full cot and then even a toddler bed, which might be an longer term option. https://www.johnlewis.com/chicco-next-2-me-forever-bedside-crib-moon-grey/p5553834?sppc=2dx927000755870203855mixedhomeeBAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgZ-6xrTKgAMV8UFBAh36fAKiEAQYASABEgLEWvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I had next to me and found it ok but a bit pointless tbh. No c section but it still wasn’t comfy to get in and out bed with it so it was on dh side. So dh still had to get baby out and pass him over to me to feed. Ds also sat early and could pull himself up the side by about 4.5months so it wasn’t safe to use.

in hindsight I would just get a Moses basket next time. Easier to move to any side of bed and, homeoffice or downstairs. If Ds fell asleep downstairs it was in pram or bouncer as we didn’t have anything downstairs.
