Antidepressants in pregnancy

Hi ladies,

what are peoples thoughts on antidepressants during pregnancy?
im nearly 6 weeks pregnant and stopped taking mine as soon as I saw my positive pregnancy test two weeks ago, but my anxiety is beginning to cripple me without them and I’m considering whether I should go back on them. (Fluoxetine)

does anyone have any experiences of this? I read on Tommys that it can increase risks or pre-term delivery, haemorrhage and autism.

any experiences or opinions much appreciated?

I'm currently 10 weeks pregnant and after speaking with my doctor we both decided it was best for me to continue taking my antidepressants. I would suggest speaking with your doctor as they will be able to help and give you better information, they may even suggest changing to a different medication that's better suited in pregnancy for anxiety now you have stopped the fluoxetine.

For me the risks were higher if I stopped taking mine and this is something the doctor will look at for yourself if you go speak to them.

I hope you manage to work things out and feel less anxious soon

I am currently 28 weeks. My midwife recommended I stay on my dose (not fluoxetine), saying a happy mum is a happy baby.

I had to see a consultant about 20 weeks. And have been advised not to have a home birth.

Other than that everything so far seems to be going well.

Definitely speak to your doctor/midwife. They will be able to advise you regarding your medication and dose.

Hope everything goes well.

I take 200mg of sertraline and currently 32 weeks, mines a bit different as it pregnancy induced anxiety. I am having growth scans and baby is healthy and measuring 50th centile at the minute. After i have him i have to stay in for 3 days just to make sure baby is ok because there can be some very rare complications but honestly I wouldn't be here without my meds so it's the lesser of two evils.

(I have suffered badly in the past with mental health but I'd been off meds for nearly 5 years)

When I had my DD (who is now 6) I was also on 200mg sertraline and she was born on her due date healthy and happy.

I know that's anecdotal, you should speak to your GP/midwife for proper advice but that is my experience.

Hi, OP

Like you l also stopped mine but when trying for a baby. I am now 33 weeks and started back on citraplam 10mg which was under the advice of a consultant. I honestly believe that without even this low dose l would really struggle.

Please don't struggle by yourself.

I’m not sure about the one you’ve been taking, but midwives say it’s best to take them if the risks outway not taking them (ie your mental welbeing).

I know a lot women are prescribed sertraline as a safe med during pregnacy if you’re willing to try that :)

WooWooWinnie · 05/08/2023 19:59

Best to go back on them if you’re struggling. Chronic stress isn’t good for baby either and loads of women take anti-depressants in pregnancy without any problems.

Took citalopram all through pregnancy and while breastfeeding. I mentioned to a MWs I was concerned about taking it and they emphasised I need to put my mental health first so I can look after my baby. DD is nearly 2, still breastfeeding and is hitting all her milestones, etc.

You need to contact doctor asap.

You shouldn't be stopping mental health medication without their knowledge. I understand you want to put your baby first and you are taking that medication for a reason.

Withdrawal and tapering need to be considered.

Just keep an eye on mental health.
