Extended Breech…37 weeks weeks pregnant!

Hey….
so I’m 37 weeks 5 days pregnant with our IVF miracle and he has been extended breech since I was 28 weeks. Every scan and every midwife appointment he has been in the same position with his head under my right rib and his legs over his head and his bum down at bottom. On Wednesday I had a midwife appointment and was sent to triage due to high blood pressure and thankfully everything is fine. Midwife checked with hands and confirmed that he’s still breech because his heartbeat was loudest far up. Once I had been monitored a doctor came to speak to me and asked if she could feel my belly and she said baby’s head is down near my left hip. She tried saying within the 40 minutes I was being monitored baby was trying to turn. I didn’t feel a thing and still got the same movements and the big lump under my rib and nothing feels different. Surely I would know if he had changed position. Every scan and every midwife appointment have proved that his head is where I believe it to be. So should I believe this doctor over all the appointments I’ve had since being 28 weeks pregnant??? Please help🙈🙈

Personally I wouldn't believe them after the scans/monitoring.

I had an undiagnosed breach - consultant said baby was head down. Previous scans showed baby was breach.

Personally it's worth pushing for another scan so you don't end up in labour with an undiagnosed breach.

My dd was the same. I had a scan and she turned 4 days before I delivered at 38 + 5. I didn’t feel her move so she must have moved while I was asleep. All 3 of mine have been breech til quite late.
I was born bum first 43 years ago. The midwife didn't think my mother was in labour as all the pains were in her bum. When they checked her my bum was already out.

I wouldn’t believe a ‘hands on’ exam over a scan , especially by a doctor over a midwife. I had an antenatal appt with my gp who said the baby was engaged head down , turned out she was feeling a bottom not a head. I had an undiagnosed footling breech birth. They only noticed when they gave me an internal in early labour and thought they felt fingers , they were horrified , then the second midwife dived in to check and said no, IT WAS TOES. Then all hell broke loose. So I had a horrific vaginal delivery with no pain relief , not even gas and air. Would absolutely not recommend . 200% Ask for a second opinion .

Hey guys, thank you all for the replies.
I have a final growth scan on Thursday which obviously seems so far away. I’ve been told pretty much since 28 weeks that it will more then likely end up being a C-section so I have had plenty of time to get used to the idea and try to be a little organised so it’s been stressing me out a little so I ended up going for a private scan today and baby is 100% still breech and wouldn’t be able to turn even if he wanted to, he was all squished! He’s already weighing 7lb4 (estimated) I feel like going to hospital just to shove it in the doctors face. It was annoying because she just wouldn’t listen to me when I said he’s breech, she obviously hadn’t read my notes too!!

My DD was in the exact same position and we also had lots of growth scans, but she came early at 34+4 (my waters broke out of nowhere and I started contracting soon after so ended up with an EMCS ). She was also an ivf miracle baby!

I sympathise - head under the ribs was not fun. She came so early I hadn’t even had a consultant appointment, but was waiting to try moxibustion.

It’s so frustrating when hcps don’t listen - hopefully you’ll get a better result at your next growth scan and you can sort out plans for your c section.

Good luck!

Oh god I feel for you!! I’m so nervous of my waters breaking at the moment but I’ve been reassured that if they do I’ll be straight in for EMCS.

You are right, ribs under ribs is definitely not fun, I feel like I’m in bed all the time at the moment because it’s the only place I can get comfy. I hope everything was okay with your little girl though after her dramatic entrance. Congratulations on your IVF miracle, I don’t know about you but this pregnancy has been a walk in the park compared to my IVF journey.

I am sure it’s definitely going to be a C-section so I will probably be getting a date on Thursday, I’ll be 38+3 so I feel like it’s going to be literally like well you’re here, let’s do it right now!😂 xx

My little IVF miracle got herself stuck in exactly the same position. Though I was very very glad that I ended up needing a scan later on in pregnancy as every midwife and doctor told me she was head down and looking great. Turns out her butt just felt very... head like?
Section booked and quick scan the morning of showed her stubbornly stuck as she was.
She had little breech froggy legs for a while which was adorable.

It definitely made me lose faith in the good old "hands on feel" method. If I hadn't had that scan by pure chance I'd have likely found out about her position during labour...!

Olivia199 · 05/08/2023 22:13

I also had the doctors/midwives who were SURE they were right and obviously she must have turned.. only to find that no, she really hadn't. And she'd fooled plenty more before them!

How strange that they have such character before there even born..He has been awkward from his very first scan at 6 weeks and every scan since.

I bet you’re relieved that you found out just in time! It’s one of the reasons why I was so nervous when she said he’s no longer breech. I knew he was! Mothers intuition! Was her legs always like that or did they go normal sometimes? I can imagine just how cute she must have looked! How was your recovery? .

They most certainly do! Mine was an awkward little bean too, and I've got to say that tracks...!
So relieved, I'm now pregnant with my second and will be asking for someone to scan before they discount any breech presentation.
Oh they went back to normal very quickly. Mostly it was when she slept, her little legs would go into the frog position. 🐸
Recovery was amazing thank you. Driving again after 2 weeks and feeling mostly normal again. I needed to be readmitted for a blood transfusion as they hadn't realised how low my blood count was before discharge. But even then I felt pretty much fine.

Best advice was to set alarms on my phone for paracetamol and brufen. Then take it even if I felt totally fine. Because if I didn't, I'd start feeling not fine and it'd take a while to get back on top of it.

But by a week in I'd pretty much ditched them other than bedtime and morning!

You've got this, and huge congratulations.

EmmaLouiise1990 · 06/08/2023 12:52

Aww congratulations! Is this one natural or IVF? Oh yeah definitely ask for another scan later on. I can’t believe how many people are told the wrong information. It’s really dangerous!

Aww bless, I bet she looked so cute! I’ve read of so many good things about ELCS! I just can’t wait to get a date now and meet the little man. Oh god I’m glad you didn’t feel rough or anything and it soon got sorted for you.

Oh I will definitely be taking your advice with the painkillers. Can you take ibuprofen when breastfeeding?

Thank you!!

One thing I would say op is make sure your baby has a hip scan - most breech babies are 100% fine and just have funny sticking up legs for a bit (as per pp’s baby!).

My DD did have a slightly underdeveloped hip socket on one side though, from having her legs in an odd position in utero.

It was easily fixed as it was picked up early - we we are automatically referred for a scan at 6 weeks but not sure how it works in other trusts. You wouldn’t know there was ever an issue now and she is a strapping 4.5 year old 😝.

Make sure you have your hospital bag packed and good luck!!!
