Fundus measured 2cms over my weeks - worried - anyone else have this?

Hiya,

I am sure I am worrying unecessarily but have just been told by my midwife that the height of my fundus is measuring 30cms and I am only 27.5 weeks.

She didn't seem concerned enough to book me in for a growth scan, saying it could just be the way the fact that the baby is now cephalic but I am worried that there is something wrong.

Have looked in all my books but they all talk about babies measuring too small.

TBH - the main reason I am concerned is because i have a huge fear of giving birth to a big baby and ripping - TMI i know but I am quite small down below!!

Would appreciate it if anyone has had a similar measurement or can let me know why this might be?
Thanks x

I think these measurements are notoriously inaccurate (even the growth scans are notoriously inaccurate!). I was pronounced to be 2-3cms small for dates - ds was born bang on the 50th centile. Try not to worry too much!

Thanks LiegeAndLief - thought no one was going to reply!

Big relief to read your reply - I am not sure tbh how they know what they are feeling for really - I can't tell whether by baby kicks are feet or hands let alone know where my fundus is!

if you do a search on here, you will find a multitude of threads about fundal height being too big / small and babies being born at perfectly normal weights

women do tend to grow the size of baby they can give birth to

the size of the baby is not going to determine if you are going to tear. there are lots of other factors..

i measured 3 weeks ahead and had a 7 lb 8 oz baby with no tearing, just a tiny graze .

giving birth in an upright or all fours position will help your pelvis open up and is a good position to take pressure off the perineum and giving birth in water can also help

Mum2Scrap · 27/02/2008 16:43

Thanks Lulumama - I am quite keen on the idea of a water birth for that very reason. Only prob is that I have a family history of pre-eclampsia (all BP and urine all fine at 28 weeks) and the hospital said it would be unlikely that I would be allowed to give birth in the midwife led unit. Grr

7lbs 8 oz eh? Perfect, I had visions of a 10lb whopper!

i was measured 10cms over (39 weeks at 29 weeks)

ds2 was 7lb 6oz

search threads on "fundal height" - you'll get many talesof innaccurate measurements...

Mum2Scrap · 27/02/2008 16:47

Wow - thanks Tutter - they really did get your measurements wrong! Will def take a look at the threads. x

unless you show any signs yourself of pre eclampsia, why can you not go to the MW led unit

www.aims.org.uk is a great site for helping you with what you are 'allowed' to do in labour

Mum2Scrap · 27/02/2008 16:51

Precisely what i thought but it seems they are oversubscribed at the midwife led unit and i suspect they were looking for any excuse to shift the load! Will def take a look at that site thanks Lulumama x

I measured way above the 'normal' range all the way through with ds2. He was born weighing 7lb 7oz.

nooonit · 27/02/2008 17:33

Don't want to be the one to scare you, Mum2Scrap, but I measured way above normal all through my pregnancy with DD2. Was sent by my midwife to see consultant who looked at me and declared that the baby seemed to be average (as DD1 was 7lb 2oz) and that bump was so big as I am overweight Went home with embarassed face - had I really eaten too much Ben and Jerry's!!! To cut a long story short, after an 18 hour labour and emergency C section DD2 was finally born weighing 9lb 13oz!!! Consultant actually came and apologised at my hospital bedside the following morning!I'm not saying this will happen to you but I wish I'd pushed for an extra scan etc if it is worrying you! Good luck!

Mum2Scrap · 27/02/2008 17:37

Blimey Nooonit - i should hope he would apologise!! Especially after saying you were overweight!
Have got an appt at the hospital in 2 weeks so will definitely push for a scan if they still think the measurements are above normal.
Thanks for the post x
You too Muffin - that is very reassuring! x

i wasalways 4 over what i should be but nothing to worry about they allow you to be so much over before panicking

if carried on it could be diabetis but they monitor this as you go so dont panic your not that much over and this can be normal

i was 32 weeks measuring 35-6
my ds was born 7 lb 1oz so no big baby for me midwife was suprised as my bump was massive and was told all through pregnancy will be a big baby and this tiny little thing appeared

Mum2Scrap · 27/02/2008 17:51

That sounds just like me bubblagirl - my bump seems to be much bigger than other pg women of 28 weeks - I always put it down to lots of water as my mum carried alot and i seem to retain a lot generally. Hope its just that and get a manageable little one like yours - perfect size! x

every one used to say to me at 20 wks not long now

you should have seen htere faces only another 20 weeks i looked ready to drop rest of me was still slim just an amazing bump

wasnt overly worried about the big baby thing as got used to the idea but when saw midwifes shocked face thought somehting was wrong then handed me this tiny bundle she was amazed she said i could of sworn with the size of you would of at least been 8 half pounds

lucky me lol he was so small good luck to you all x

deaconblue · 27/02/2008 19:37

Ds was 2cm too big for a few weeks in a row and then was bang on the right size by the end of the pregnancy. He ended up weighing 8lb3 so not that big. My dc on the way is apparently very big according to scan but only measures 1cm bigger than the number of weeks I am. All very vague i think. Also the size of your "bits" isn't really relevant to giving birth as it all stretches. Plus a difference of a 1lb or so covering an entire baby's body will make almost no difference to the size of head coming out. Don't worry

Naetha · 27/02/2008 22:53

I measured 44cm at 39 weeks - was sent for an emergency growth scan, but DS put in his appearance a week and a half later at a healthy 8lbs 10oz.

LiegeAndLief · 28/02/2008 09:17

Mum2Scrap, without wanting to worry you, pre-eclampsia can first present during labour or even after birth and can be very serious. So if you have a strong family history, especially of severe PE, they might have a valid reason for wanting you in hospital even if you have shown no symptoms before labour. Maybe it's something you could discuss further with your mw or doctor?

Mum2Scrap · 28/02/2008 11:06

Thanks Shopping and Naetha - very reassuring! Especially about the size of my bits!!
LiegeAndLief - I sadly know all too well how serious PE can be. My gran had it and my mum but with my mum she ended up having fits after giving birth to me then had a stroke and went into a coma for two days - they should never have let her go into second stage labour and should have given her a csection. That was the reason why I am an only child - they told her she shouldn't risk having another.
Thanks for your concern - I am under the care of a consultant and have a great midwife who I see every 2 weeks. So far all my bp and urine have come back normal. Although i know the dangers of it, I still want the opportunity of a water birth if all is going to plan because I really think being in the water will keep me calm and hopefully help prevent tearing a little more. If it comes down to me being told i have to go to the medicalised side of maternity I will just refuse to get out of the bath!!

So sorry to hear about your mum's experience. I have a similar family history (athough not as severe as your poor mum) but my mum was never properly diagnosed - she fitted after my brother's birth and the doctor told her she was just in shock...

I can understand how you feel though, I desperately wanted a home birth - unfortunately never got to fight my corner as my pre-eclamptic genes got the better of me and ds was born by cs at 34 weeks. Great to hear that you are getting such good care, good luck with staving off the PE and I hope you get your water baby

nancy75 · 28/02/2008 11:56

i think the measurements are quite inacurate, they measured me and said i was 6 weeks smaller than i should have been, said baby would be tiny, i got in a state, dd born perfectly healthy 7lbs 8ozs
