Hospitals in Newham/east London

Hey,

For anyone with any experience in hospitals in Newham/ east London. What hopsital would you recommend for during pregnancy? I used Newham general with my son and my MMC and honestly I'm not happy with the service either time.

My son was almost left in me with no waters as they wouldn't stop telling me I had peed when I hadn't, the didn't notice his cord was round his neck twice for a couple days and it affected his heart rate. Very rude staff and not friendly with my partner at all. Wouldn't believe me when I needed to push either.

With my MMC, even the booking appointment they were almost aggressive with the blood test and sent me home with blood still pouring out my arm, once I lost the baby they were very careless and just told me to try again. Even in epu they were laughing and joking and passing around baby photos... Abit insensitive if you ask me. I'd rather not have to travel too far but I'm not keen on their care so wondering if anyone has any advice for other, local hospitals that they've had good experiences with.

Many thanks!

Not sure how close you are to Homerton. But I was very happy there.

Depending where you are, Royal London could be good to get to by public transport. I had mine at Whipps. It was ok. First time bad, second time great. But I think better than Newham General.

@Bergmum does Homerton have parking at all? It would be fairly easy for me if I can drive not sure about public transport tho

@MerryMarigold yes I considered here but it may be just that tiny bit too far, thanks for the recommendation though as it may just be worth the extra travel if I can't find anywhere else decent

I had my daughter at royal London and having my second there too. I found their antenatal care a bit basic and brief and no continuity of midwife but the birth was really good and the midwives and facilities were great. I gave birth in the lotus centre and had a water birth. My nearest hospital is newham but I still chose royal London. It’s easy to get to by public transport but no parking so not good for car.

Homerton is an option for people in Newham. The car park is usually very full but it is easy to get to on the 276 bus. The route starts at Newham General and passed through Plaistow, Canning Town and Stratford.

I would suggest to avoid Homerton... Had my DS there, was a complete car crash.

Thank you ladies! I've been looking up the ratings of the maternity units at these hospitals and honestly I think in east London we have rubbish hospitals!!
Newham general maternity rating is 'requires improvement' and was actually 'inadequate' not too long ago 🤦🏼‍♀️. Homerton maternity is rated 'good' but the safety aspect 'requires improvement'🤦🏼‍♀️ and royal London 'requires improvement'. Now I know why my friend with money went private 😅 sadly I can't afford that!

Most hospital recent CQC inspections have gone down and require improvement apart from a very small amount. If your pregnancy is high risk, then I would recommend the Royal London Hospital as it deals with high-risk pregnancies and has a level 3 neonatal unit. However, Homerton, Newham or Whipps do not. If not Royal London, then I would choose Homerton.
The sad thing is that your experience depends on the midwife/ obstetrician who is assigned to you on the day and the amount ot staff on duty.
I probable would recommend your local hospital in case of an emergency, and you need to get somewhere quick. If you go with Royal London and need to rush to Whipps, they will be able to see your electronic pregnancy notes as they are the same Trust.

I had four high risk pregnancies all delivered safely at homerton. My first wasn't high risk until it was right at birth (32 week placental abruption) they saved my son's life. I had really good ante natal care in my subsequent pregnancies.
Homerton actually do have a level 3 NICU.

Post natal care however was pretty poor.
