Hello!
I am pregnant with my first child and have been given the option between Newcastle RVI and NSEC Cramlington. I know Cramlington has lovely private rooms but really I want to best treatment and support more than anything.
I'm nervous with it being my first, so a team that could spot any issues and provide a positive experience.

Any thoughts or experiences would be a big help and I don't have lots of friends who've given birth in the area.

Iv had friends have babies and cramlington and all good. My first I had at wansbeck but this one will be cramlington so hoping all good how many weeks are you?

TheMildManneredMilitant · 04/08/2023 20:15

They both offer similar care don't they? What's closest?

I've used both although admittedly RVI was 12 years ago. RVI was fine but if it had been rush hour baby would have been born in the car! It was also extremely busy. Cramlington was induction so different birth experience but also fine. It felt calmer than RVI but it can entirely depend on how many women are in at one time.

But having own room and option of partner staying at Cramlington was so much better than the shared postnatal ward at RVI.

I’m going to PM you.

I had one good experience at RVI and one bad. If you use the birth centre you get own nice room rather than the ward.

Hi! I’m having the same dilemma choosing between Cramlington and RVI. I’m 19 weeks with my first, my midwife is heavily pushing for Cramlington but I’ve got friends in the medical profession who’ve said to go with RVI. Does anyone know if Cramlington is also consultant led? Sorry to jump on this post - also just looking for people’s experience!

Thanks all. I am 7 weeks, so pretty early. I sense I am being nudged towards Cramlington by my Midwife but as I live between the two I am keen to determine if care is better at one.
Thanks for the responses so far

Personally I would go with the RVI.

As gloomy as it may sound, if anything was to go wrong that is where the Great North Children's Hospital is. That is also where you'd be sent if you needed further treatment etc.

I know you probably shouldn't make your decision based entirely on this, but it is just something I would add into your consideration.

I also love between them both and was at the RVI with my first and have chose it again for my second.

I had a great experience there tbh, couldn't fault it.
I think you'll have pros and cons to either sites and of course everyone has a different experience.

Agree with Cpc1039, also have had advice from medical friends who have worked at both sites and would recommend RVI for a first birth. Primarily because you don't know what could happen and the way they respond to Cat1/Cat2 emergencies appears slightly different (with a preference for RVI). Difficult one! I'm also in the same position & feel that I'd like the separate room of Cramlington, just not sure it's the best place for my first.
