How much weight gain is normal in pregnancy?

Hi, I'm 27 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I was already overweight when I got pregnant, BMI 33, so I was worried about putting on too much weight. First trimester I was ill so didn't put anything on. But since then I've gone through a phase of being starving, like real stomach rumbling and aches. Although overweight, I used to be able to control any psychological hunger pretty well if I stayed conscious of it. Now, it's been more like physical hunger. Don't know why - I've already got enough body fat, surely I don't need more for baby!

Haven't been weighed since booking, but tomorrow is my first MW appt where she'll weigh me. Just weighed myself and I'm about 11 lbs heavier than booking. Feel disappointed in myself and concerned that I'm only 27 weeks and have another trimester to put more weight on!

Don't know what's normal weight gain for someone with a BMI 33 to start with or how to manage this hunger. Googled it and seems like I should be trying not to put weight on full stop(?). Any advice gratefully received!

I’m usually very slim and bmi of 19 but with all my pregnancies put on 5 stone !!!! I lost it all afterwards each time within 6-12 months without much effort except breastfeeding and trying to eat reasonably healthy meals but it was strange and i was told each time I’d gained too much ?

I was told that 25-35 lbs (about 11-15 kg) is the recommended weight gain range and obviously you gain weight more rapidly after 20 weeks.

With a higher BMI your midwife may advise you to aim for the lower end of the recommended weight gain. If you’ve gained 11lbs at 27 weeks, I imagine that you’re doing fine.

I gained 20 kilos in pregnancy (5ft 8 stone pre pregnancy) and gave birth 3 weeks ago, I am currently 1 stone above my pre pregnancy weight but it's coming down daily! I lost around 6lbs overnight (thanks to pp night sweats haha). I was worried about the weight gain but it's literally falling off.

Bubs was 7,12.

For what it's worth, all I done was eat first and second trimester then my appetite went back to normal, if not less, in the third trimester.

I'm just under 20 weeks with a 10lb weight gain already, same bmi as you.

I think around 20lb is recommended in total for our bmi, but extra weight doesn't do anything bad it just increases risk for certain things, so if you put more on than recommended it really isn't the end of the world.

As for the hunger, you need more protein. Eat protein rich meals and healthy snacks. You don't need many more calories in pregnancy, but baby will suck all your nutrients up so you need more than you usually would. Consume more protein and you should feel less hungry.

Chicken, tuna, cheese, eggs, almonds are all great protein sources. Also make sure to eat fruit and veg

In Europe we're told 10-11kg so about 21 lbs, absolute top! Health professionals are very insistent about that. I think they're right. 1st pregnancy I put on 9kg and everything was a breeze during and after. The second I just couldn't stop eating and put on about 20kg. There was no comparison, pregnancy and the aftermath were, let's say, a lot more challenging. Yep, it makes sense to not overload your body and organs with extra food and extra weight when it's already working hard at growing a baby.

I’m 16 weeks and put on 12lbs so far, I feel disgusting. The only food I could stomach for the first 14 weeks was chocolate, cheese and bread. My appetite has returning to normal now but I still feel awful about it all.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 07/12/2023 04:16

I was overweight and was told no more than 5kg.

Baby was 3 weeks early but as it turned out I only put 3kg.

It was a rough pregnancy so I actually lost weight in the first trimester. I had GD managed by insulin which enabled me to eat pretty much what I always did.

Honestly I gained a shocking amount! Normally 55kg, went up to about 85kg.

As pp have said I easily lost it all and back to pre-pregnancy weight within 6 months thanks to breastfeeding 😊
