Elective c section

Hi all,
Currently 21 weeks pregnant with 4th baby.
Previous births have been vaginally but my last delivery in 2021 ended up with me having a 3rd degree tear and baby having shoulder dystopia.

However, with this pregnancy I'm planning on having a c section. My only worry is that they book you in before 39 weeks and with all my pregnancies they all all been around 38 weeks.

I don't want to go into labour naturally as I'm scared of giving birth naturally again.

Do you think they will do a c section at 38 weeks?

They do elective c sections for gestational diabetes from 38 weeks so I don't see why not! Have you spoken to your consultant about it?

Thansk for responding.. I see the consultant on 4th sep. I'm just worried they will say no to me having c section at 38 weeks. Like I said all my children have come around 38 weeks + a day or 2.
I don't have GD but they class this pregnancy as high risk due to my previous birth.

So they will probably book you in for 39 weeks regardless. However if you go into labour before that they will treat it as an emergency c section. You just need to go to the hospital at the first sign of a contraction. Not ideal.
There's the possibility that they might listen to you though so fingers crossed

They will most likely book you in at 39 weeks unless they have a medical reason to bring it forward. When I had mine booked I was told that if I went into labour early then I would phone triage straight away and explain I was due a c section and they would try do an emergency section.

I had mine at 38 weeks. It's worth asking them.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 01/08/2023 16:58

I had mine booked in for 38 weeks as I went into labour with my previous pregnancy at 37 weeks.
This was 7 yrs ago though. You may have to have steroids injected a few days apart to minimise the baby's risk of any breathing problems.

Not without a medical reason. They used to do them from 38 weeks but there is some evidence of increased need for NICU so now they go for 39.

Having said that I was told if I went into labour before my booked section at 39 weeks they would perform an emergency one immediately. Talk to your midwife / consultant about your fears and I'm sure they will put your mind at rest

Agreed. I started contractions at 38+6 and baby was born at 39 weeks on the dot, a few days ahead of my scheduled CS. We discussed what I wanted to do and when I said I still wanted to have the CS that was agreed and I was booked in.

Mine was last year btw and I had to have steroids.
