Pregnancy with a herniated disc??

Hi! One year ago I had a pretty bad back injury causing 2 herniated discs l4l5 and l5s1 when it first happened it was excruciating and was in horrible pain that made it difficult to walk or move. Fast forward to now, it’s mostly better, I only get minor pain when I arch my back and my mri measured them to be 2mm so very tiny. Im starting to try to get pregnant and I’m having so much anxiety that it’ll get worse again. Did anyone else have pre-existing disc herniations and did pregnancy/birth affect you at all?

Hey hun, I don’t have much advice as my pregnancy unfortunately ended in miscarriage, however I also had an injury last year and herniated l4l5, similar to you I couldn’t walk for some time and had a lot of rehab to get me back to “normal”. When I spoke with the physio they said to ensure I do all my exercises nightly and keep moving, they said it may flare my symptoms towards the end or may not, I was told it wouldn’t impact the actual labour. Hope this helps somewhat x

I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriage, thanks for your response. That is what I’ve been told to. I’m currently in physical therapy and have consulted 2 physical therapists about it and they said it’s not going to be a risk factor and I’m fine to get pregnant and back pain is inevitable regardless of an injury, I just might have it more. I’ll be working with a physical therapist during pregnancy also. It’s scary not knowing how my body will feel with all that pressure so I’m trying to hold onto the fact that the PTs are not worried at all so maybe I shouldn’t be either.

Thank you!

Exactly that, they are the experts. And remember, many people have herniated discs without even knowing, they just think they have a bad back, because you know you are more inclined to take extra care of yourself x
