No OPKs measure the LH surge which is what triggers ovulation. If you get a positive OPK (it isn't like a pregnancy test it is only positive if the test line is as dark or darker than the control line - clearblue digital OPKs are by far the best because you don't have to compare the lines the test does it for you, but they are hideously expensive) then you should ovulate within 12-36 hours, most women ovulate about 24 hours after the positive OPK. BUT it isn't always as simple as that - some women get a positive OPK but don't ovulate (typically if you have PCOS), some women get several LH surges before they ovulate and some women never pick up their LH surge and so get -ve OPKS but still ovulate. For most people it works though.

The SMEP plan works really well I think, I know lots of people who've got pregnant within 2 or 3 cycles using it.

Its a funny old game eh? I was desperate to get preggers by the end of 2007 and for 5 months straight DH was sexually enslaved for the 5 consecutive nights of my ovulation week, sometimes he protested but not always. 20th December, Aunt Flo arrived so I thought chill out, let nature take its course. Half a bottle of wine and an impromtu quickie on the stroke of midnight January 1st 2008 and that was it, BFP.

spugs · 27/02/2008 11:01

i went for every other day with 'extra' around half way through my cycle or when i noticed the egg white mucus (lovely) with my 2 planned pregnancys it took 4 mths and 2 mths to get pregnant. good luck

maxbear · 27/02/2008 11:09

First time every day when I thought I was ovulating, Irregular cycle so had to go by stretchy stuff. Worked after 8 months.
Second time every other day, worked second month.
Third time ....oops getting a bit carried away there, might happen in a year or two

sorkycake · 27/02/2008 11:15

Or you could get a fabulous book called Taking Charge Of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. Very good info inside on natural fertility/family planning.

This is my 1st baby and we tried every day after my AF for the whole month! yes we had fun! Fell pregnant sometime in that month! VERY lucky I think as I too have irregular periods.

herbgarden · 27/02/2008 13:39

M2b2br - you must have been knackered with all that bding. I have the Toni Weschler book so have got quite interested in my stretchy mucus - isn't it great when you finally know what these things are. Have done the OPK today and still no happy face. Maybe I can dh interested tonight ....

I'm the same as Harriet - we had sex once on the week that I had the egg-white type discharge and I got pregnant that month. I realise that it was very lucky indeed, but it certainly worked for me on this occasion.

PetitFilou1 · 27/02/2008 15:50

I'm 35 and it took me two months this time. So don't feel it will necessarily be difficult because of your age! Get Taking Charge of your Fertility by Toni Wechsler and go from there. Once you know your body a bit better you don't actually need to have sex that often to conceive.

herbgarden · 27/02/2008 20:04

Thanks Petit Filou....I've been out this pm and got myself some OPK's (digital - sod the expense...might pay off in the long run) and have printed off a fertility chart from the internet to manually enter my temp. I have the Weschler book and found it great last time....DH is quite ill at the mo (nothing long term, but right in the "right" time of my cycle) so this month I think will be a write off anyway so a good chance to get my self sorted - next month would produce a christmas /nY baby so I'm abstaining !! (sounds odd but I always think it's hard on people who have to roll the christmas celebrations into their birthday ones too - that coming from a summer baby of course !)....

First month lucky in our case - altho it was a bit of a shock to happen that quick....Dh thinks he has super sperm now

This feels like I'm really revealing a bit too much - thankfully this is anonymous! Anyway 3 or 4 months before trying we started the prep, ie: stopped smoking, less drinking (for DH), started taking vitamins and generally being v healthy. I also tracked when I got my period and discovered I was the basic 28 day cycle. So it was easy to work out when I should have been fertile so we had sex every other day from 5 days before until 5 days after (that was the fun part!). We didn't worry about positions but I did lie with my bum on a cushion for 10mins after (ie: bum bit higher than the rest of me).

PregnantPenguin · 27/02/2008 21:44

Forgot to say - good luck and enjoy all that trying!

expatinscotland · 27/02/2008 21:45

Hmm, the times I conceived post 35, not anymore than usual.

schneebly · 27/02/2008 23:32

my friend just found out she is pregnant and she only had sex once on day 9 of her cycle!

mommymummytobe · 28/02/2008 19:28

i'm another fan of "taking charge of your fertility"what an informative book! there's so much to discover when it comes to determining your fertile days!!! it really helped when timing bd-ing for the month. i conceived the second month of trying after reading the book and temping. also, i really recommend using this "personal lubricant" called PRESEED (preseed.co.uk)(do a lot of people know about it?) --the author recommended it, b/c it's sperm friendly and actually helps those little guys stay alive and get to where they need to go to finish the job, and it did!

beaniesteve · 28/02/2008 19:34

AM intereste in this sponge bath thing... why is that?

mad4mybaby · 28/02/2008 19:35

sorry to jump in but can someone give me a bit more info on checking your temp? I know to do it before you get out of bed, but exactly when should your temp rise when ov and also is it before you ov or during?? Is it only 0.5 degree did i read somewhere?

MrsMattie · 28/02/2008 19:38

DS conceived on about Day 7 of my cycle - we'd only had sex twice that month, I think.

2nd pregnancy (ended in m/c) I'm pretty sure was conceived very late in my cycle, maybe day 26. Again, we had only had sex 2 or 3 times that month.

Been ttc again since October - getting jiggy every other day on average, never more than 3 days between sessions ...and nada!

mommymummytobe · 28/02/2008 19:47

hi mad4mybaby, check out www.fertilityfriend.com--
it'll give you lots of great info about temping.

mad4mybaby · 28/02/2008 19:52

thanks mmt. Im worried im not OV. Anyone know if you can stop OV?? I have ds. Not been ttc for long but dont seem to get the stretchy cm and im doing the wee sticks and they are always neg... doing temp didnt work previously as i always forgot as would be jumping out of bed to ds

mommymummytobe · 28/02/2008 22:50

sometimes you can have scant fertile mucus and the only way to know it's there is to check internally, directly around your cervix. that might make some people queasy to do that--but it's your own body, and it shouldn't be a big deal...

sometimes people ovulate really really early, you may be OV towards the end of your period and have the stretchy stuff mixed in w/the menstrual blood and not even know it, believe it or not.

and it is possible to stop OV from time to time, but i'm not sure if you'd still be getting your period from month to month. i stopped OV when i went off the pill last year, and didn't have my period for 5 months.
so when my periods returned (thank GOD) i knew i was OV again and i got to bd-ing RIGHT AWAY!!!

you are supposed to temp at the same time every day in order to keep a consistent chart, but of course not everyone can do that. just do the best you can. honestly, look at the fertlityfriend website, and check out the toni weschler book b/c they both provide amazing advice about all of these things.

i hope this helps. good luck.
