Subchorionic Hematoma has got larger in the space of just over a week - feeling anxious!

Hi everyone,

I put a post on here last week when I found out I had a Subchorionic Hematoma at 9 weeks 3 days after a random fresh bleed and was told it was measuring at 1.3x1.8x1.1 cm which I was told was very small.

I had another bleed after my initial small bleed, which was a lot larger but the EPU said this is normal and to monitor. I had brown bleeding after for a day and then nothing for 5 days. I then had a private scan yesterday and in typical fashion had a bleed before I went in, this was more than spotting, more like when you first come on your period but not as much as the other one and I also noticed it was a darker red. The sonographer measured it has grown to 3.5x2.1x2.3cm and I was 10 weeks 5 days - she said she wasn’t concerned as it’s at the side of the placenta so wouldn’t affect the baby and actually said that they usually won’t tell women if they have one, because it just increases anxiety when they know they’re quite common. She also said she’s seen much bigger ones and caused no problems.

I didn’t expect for it to grow, I only expected it to bleed out or reabsorb & now I am feeling anxious as to whether it will continue to grow. I know there’s nothing that can be done, but I was wondering if there are any stories of peoples that have grown or had larger ones and been ok? I’m already taking progesterone as the EPU gave me this for extra protection, I guess I’m just anxious that it’s going to increase and potentially cause problems in the future and I feel it’s stopping me from having any kind of excitement. I had a miscarriage in May at 5 weeks ish & I’m so close to 12 weeks that I want to feel excited but this is bringing me down :( I’m now scared to go to my 12 week scan for the fear of it’s got even bigger.

Not sure if I replied to your other thread as I know there has been a few recently. I had a 6cm SCH at 13 weeks which resolved by 18 weeks. During that time the bleeding was either bright red, dark and then light brown. I avoided heavy lifting, sex and drunk lots of water and orange juice. I've read that pomegranate juice can help so maybe worth a shot.

It really is an anxious time but majority of SCH's do lead to happy and healthy babies 😊 x

Hi think I replied to your other thread as well. As you were told, sch is quite common but most of them don't cause any problem to the baby and will resolve over time. Mine was 6cm-7cm for quite a while but didn't bleed much. Also if it's not bright red bleeding, then it's just old blood coming out. Any bleeding is scary but of the many stories I've read, probably only 1-2 actually resulted in miscarriage.

If you have to do something to reassure yourself, I'd just take things easy. Whenever you have bleeding, put yourself on bed rest. I was wfh for a few weeks following my bleeding episode.

Fingers crossed for you!

With my 1st pregnancy I had a 5cm hematoma underneath the sac but it had reabsorbed by the time my 12 week scan come along. With my 3rd pregnancy I had a huge bleed, I had to go to hospital by ambulance and I was literally passing liver like clots. I thought it was all over. I got to epu they scanned me and said I had a significant subchorionic hematoma and it was much bigger then the gestational sac and it was wrapped all around it, they basically said be prepared cos my level of bleeding and blood loss was that bad and she said if it continues it will take the pregnancy with it. They booked me in for a reassurance scan in 2 weeks to see the growth and I went back and it had grown to now 14 cm and she was shocked I was still pregnant and hadn’t seen one that big before and I was only 9 weeks. I bled everyday for a few weeks and then by the time I had my 12 week scan it had all gone, he’s now 4 weeks old. I was looking for threads like this when I had one and I was terrified, like you I had a miscarriage too before him so I was so anxious. Yours is small in comparison and it is quite small anyway. I know it’s hard but try not to worry. Just take it easy and like the above poster said water and oj are good not sure why but they are, I went through gallons when I had my big one and I’m sure that helped it reabsorb xx

How big is the SCH compared with the sac? (Or the CRL if that's the measurement you have now?)

EllieJade95 · 30/07/2023 20:02

@mumtotwox Thank you for your message of reassurance. I wasn’t overly anxious about it before but I think it’s just the fact that I know it’s got larger which is stressing a bit - although the sonographer did say it may not be that it’s got larger but that it’s actually just changed shape slightly. I have seen a few things about the orange juice so will definitely try! Xx

@katerose2022 Yes and the sonographer actually said to me, we don’t worry it’s more the fact you have to deal with the anxiety of the bleeding. I have had two bright red bleeds (but one was literally just one bleed on a tissue) and the darker red one yesterday, all end up with brown bleeding for about a day or so after.
I have definitely been taking it easy and will continue to do so, when I had the bleed yesterday it’s the first lot of walking I have done in over a week and I wondered if it triggered it. Thank you for your message of reassurance!

@candycrush789 Oh my gosh I’m so sorry to hear of your experience that sounds terrifying! So glad you got through it! I will start having the orange juice, I’ve been having lots of water so will continue that too.
She said to me the position of mine was the side of the placenta, so how she described it was that the blood would come out not passing the sack if that makes sense so I’m trying to keep positive! It’s just such an anxious and stressful time but hoping for the best! Xx

@Whataretheodds Annoyingly don’t have the sack measurements but the CRL is 39.2mm so 3.92cm. I did take a screenshot of the video they did and have highlighted in yellow the hematoma, I personally don’t think it’s a similar size to the sack but what do I know!

That looks smaller than the sac to me, maybe not even half the size?

Seasideanticscanleadtosandybuckets · 30/07/2023 20:18

When i had ds at 35 weeks it was because they had seen 2 measuring 12cm each... Was quite a shocker as was packed for holidays and ended up having an emcs instead!

EllieJade95 · 30/07/2023 20:26

@Whataretheodds Yeah I think so too. In this picture it looks a bit smaller as well.. or maybe I am wishful thinking 😅

Just want to give you a bit of reassurance as I had an extremely large hematoma and bled a lot. I lost clots the size of my palm. The sonographer who I saw privately advised me to rest as much as possible and took sick leave to lay in bed after my heavy bleeds, I took her advice and extremely glad I did.
I did have some blood up until 20 weeks ish and in the end my body re absorbed the hematoma.

I now have a gorgeous, healthy, cheeky 3 year old boy and at the time I was so concerned and worried I was going to lose him.

I hope this helps ease some of your anxieties.
