Pregnancy and prolactin levels

Hey all,

So since my MMC I've had some issues, which we've found to be my prolactin levels being too high. Around 700 last time I checked and anything over 400 to 500 is considered high. I'm due for another blood test Tuesday to see if it's increasing or decreasing.

However I just found out I'm pregnant, lik super early my period hasn't even arrived yet. So I'm not getting my hopes up yet just incase! However I am concerned that high prolactin can cause miscarriage. Has anyone got any experience of this? Can the drs help? Have you had treatment during pregnancy, was it a successful pregnancy etc. Any info is massively appreciated!!

Hello, I am in the exact same position and wondering what to do. What was the outcome for you if you don’t mind me asking?

Confusedddddddd · 04/09/2023 22:56

I haven't been in this situation but I've had high prolactin for 10 years and been on Cabergoline the whole time other than when pregnant.
You usually have to stop treatment as soon as you get a positive pregnancy test, so I wouldn't be too worried.

I might be wrong but high prolactin usually stops ovulation, I haven't heard of it causing miscarriages. And your prolactin will rise during pregnancy anyway.

@pigeon166 hey, I'm currently 8-9 weeks pregnant, so far seems fine. Won't relax until after the 12 week scan but my intense nausea this morning gives me hope all is going ok lol. Doctors aren't worried as it hasn't affected my cycles or ability to get pregnant, it's kind of just been left for now as they can't keep checking in pregnancy as it'll rise anyway. Fingers crossed this pregnancy progresses! I lost my last at 10+6 so obviously still worried for a few more weeks yet.

@Confusedddddddd thank you, yes doctors seem to agree with you just never know how to relax when you've had a loss I guess!

Glad to hear all is going well! That is interesting to hear, I will speak to my doctor about it then.

agree with it being impossible to relax after a loss!

Hi Ladies, I am in a similar boat to yourselves! I went for blood tests as have been struggling to conceive but I crazily fell pregnant the same week! My prolactin levels were high so I had a repeat test done a couple of weeks ago. Results today - over 700 so being referred to consultant for further advise (6 week wait!). I am currently 8 weeks pregnant so praying all will be ok. Had early scan last week and saw baby's heartbeat. I don't suffer from headaches etc. Do you have any updates?

Ttcmumma · 06/10/2023 13:26

@LucyVic08 hey Hun! It's such a worrying time isn't it.

My baby is now measuring 13+4 (had an extra private scan today due to a tiny amount of spotting) all seems to be going fine and baby is doing well! My light bleeding is potentially irritation or sensitivity on the outside of the vagina so shouldn't be anything to worry about x

Hi there @LucyVic08 I’m also 8 weeks now, went for an early scan last week and saw baby’s heartbeat which was such a relief. I’m going for a private scan in a week so hoping all continues to go well. Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy!

Hi, just spotted this thread. I had/have hyperprolactinemia and at their highest my levels were over 3600.

I had to take a dopamine agonist (I’ve been on cabergoline and bromocriptine) to get my levels to normal range. My fertility clinic wanted levels under 700 to proceed with an IVF cycle because of the impacts of high prolactin on ovulation.

I fell pregnant last year after three year TTC and just as we were about to start IVF. I’m now sitting here breastfeeding my 2 month old. Your prolactin levels naturally increase during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding so I won’t be tested again for a while. All the best for your pregnancies xx

Congratulations that’s great to hear and thank you for taking the time to share your story x
