Can anybody make sense of my urine results?

I have done three urine samples now and all have come back 'mixed growth of probable contaminants' but no urine infection - please repeat.

It's really frustrating!! I keep getting the same result, what does this mean?

It says my epithelial cells are 39 per ul?

It means there are bacteria from your skin/vagina/bowel in the sample and it's probably not a true mid-stream urine sample. The results need interpreting in the context of the rest of the urinalysis and symptoms.

monty92 · 29/07/2023 13:24

@Greybeardy I swear I followed the instructions exactly 🙈

The rest of the cells were normal and I have no symptoms. Very reluctant to take antibiotics if I don't need to.

Usually only one bacteria will be causing a UTI.
Your body is colonised with lots of bacteria and some of those bacteria which are healthy normal flora can contaminate the urine specimen.
So if it’s a mixed growth of different types of bacteria on the agar plate (3 or more) we can’t tell which is causing the infection or if there is even an infection present.
When we isolate the bacteria causing the infection we test it for antibiotic susceptibility afterwards.
Maybe taking the sample straight after a shower will help?
What are your white cells and red cells?

Dtearberry · 29/07/2023 15:26

But if you have no symptoms why are you repeating the test?
There should be 3 words on the results report after please repeat (if clinically indicated).

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 29/07/2023 15:29

Agree with whats said above. Mixed growths are rarely infections. Make sure to have a good wee first into the toilet before putting the sterile bowl under, don't let it dribble on your body either.

Are they asking you to repeat it each time?

@monty92 I had this. Was given antibiotics called nitrofurantoin x

CR7 · 29/07/2023 15:38

Ps I never had any symptoms

DiscoStusMoonboots · 29/07/2023 15:39

I recently had this - had to retest and was given antibiotics in the end. Still weeing all the time now, but I guess that's just how I 'do' pregnancy 🤷‍♀️

Hi @Dtearberry,

Here is the report I received. Does this make things any clearer? Thank you.

Next time I'll wash and then do the sample straight after.

Can anybody make sense of my urine results?

@TheLovleyChebbyMcGee yes, this is the third time they've asked me to repeat.

@CR7 @DiscoStusMoonboots did they ever confirm whether you had an infection, or just prescribed them to be cautious? X

I had this. What @Greybeardy says is exactly what my midwife told me!

Sorry, I should have said - yes, apparently there was an infection. Can't remember exactly the type of infection, but they prescribed antibiotics (for all the good they've done 😂)

Confirmed on the second x

CR7 · 29/07/2023 18:28

Three in a row inconclusive shows something is definitely there

monty92 · 29/07/2023 18:33

Thanks ladies for your input :-)

I know this sounds like a ridiculous question, but could abnormal cells from a smear / hpv be causing this result? I had previous lletz treatment for abnormal cells and I'm nervous that it's come back!

CR7 · 29/07/2023 18:47

@monty92 I think it's more likely to be a uti.
