Is it possible to prevent on my stomach?

I’ve read about this as I got stretch marks in puberty that I was paranoid about for years. There’s a lot of evidence to say that if you’re genetically predisposed to them then you’ll get them anyway.

It is best to moisturise at least daily though, to ensure your skin is as healthy as it can be. But BioOil etc isn’t a miracle cure unfortunately.

TheNineNine · 26/07/2023 17:43

I agree that there must be a genetic component. I put on four stone with my first pregnancy and I didn't get any at all.

cocksstrideintheevening · 26/07/2023 18:18

I had horrible ones on my thighs as a teenager that have completely gone now. Didn't get a single one when pregnant with twins and I was huge. I don't do anything to try and prevent them.

Garman · 26/07/2023 18:53

Nope, it’s genetic.

PickledScrump · 26/07/2023 19:45

Stretch marks occur in the deeper levels of your skin, deeper than any lotions or creams will go. So unfortunately it is all in your genes. However using a good moisturiser can really helps with the itching.

if you want to treat yourself the mama mio tummy butter is lovely, or a cheaper option is the Superdrug own brand vitamin E body cream. Also drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from within

statetrooperstacey · 26/07/2023 19:57

Are you young and does your mum have them ? If yes to either then you will probably get them.
there is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent them.
However, all is not lost!! Keep in mind that when they first turn up and at the end of pregnancy is when they will look at their absolute worse. Mine were wide and deep and plentiful! and I was devastated, so self conscious, but they honestly do fade , they really do, mine aren’t even wrinkled anymore . And nearly everyone has them, just from growing, lots of men have them from the gym, if you get them don’t lose heart they will improve significantly. Bikini = spray tan if it bothers you.

Good to know I can be lazy lol

I think it's genetic. I've had two babies and don't have a single stretch mark. I think if you keep exercising, moisturise and eat healthily rather than "eating for two" you're on the right path.

MantaKay · 26/07/2023 20:21

I put on a lot of weight early on in the pregnancy and then luckily stopped after I started paying attention to what I eat.
So stretch marks is something I am think about a lot and I am moisturising twice a day with a body butter and adding centella asiatica drops on it. I think centella asiatica is the only ever proven compound that helps. I use this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/BIOALMA-ASIAN-COINLEAF-MOTHER-TINCTURE/dp/B01N7UAW6T?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1 and so far so good. I am 22 weeks now

Branster · 26/07/2023 20:29

There's nothing you can do to prevent them.
I used a lot of (mostly) fancy oils/creams as preventative measure, consistently, religiously throughout my pregnancies as soon as I knew I was pregnant.
It made zero difference. Got quite a few in the last few 3-4 weeks before giving birth, both babies were late and I didn't put on weight overall, but the abdomen and bust area obviously became huge.
Maybe I should have had planned caesareans a couple of weeks before the due dates to reduce this problem.
My mother and sister don't have stretch marks and they never used special creams and we are of similar build.
There's nothing you can do.
On a positive note, the vast majority of mums I know don't have stretch marks from pregnancies so there's a high chance you won't get them.

BabyB2022 · 26/07/2023 21:04

Agree with others it's genetic. I didn't get any first pregnancy, I got some in my last week with my second. I carried smaller second time round and had a smaller baby so took me a bit by surprise but nothing I could do about it. Nearly 6 months pp and they're not really noticeable as they've faded so much.

lavenderdilly · 26/07/2023 21:13

No harm in talking collagen everyday, increases skin elasticity. Safe for pregnancy, actually might be beneficial in pregnancy as you're protein requirements increase.

Hollyppp · 26/07/2023 21:50

They’re often hereditary and nothing you can do about it.

fku · 27/07/2023 00:04

I think it's genetic. I have 4 kids and no stretch marks. I didn't bother with any fancy lotions.

Sunnydayz · 27/07/2023 00:10

My mum has noticeable stretch marks so I did everything I could to prevent getting them, and it worked, no stretch marks from my pregnancy.

Moisturised once or twice daily from about 4/5 months.
stayed hydrated
ate well and stayed active to prevent excess weight gain
dont smoke
avoid suntanning (too much)
I had a “neat” bump so perhaps it was that

Grish069 · 20/09/2023 19:22

I think to a degree there are genetic elements to it - like if you have thin skin or stretch marks run in the family. But there are definitely ways you can lessen your chances. I say this because I have stretch marks on my hips from puberty, but managed to avoid them in pregnancy. There are lots of examples like this which mean it’s not PURELY genetic. If you do everything you can, then I think you can do no more!

Here are some things I found helpful:

  1. try to be healthy in pregnancy and not eat for two “just because”. Of course I had my bingemoments but if you try to not get too carried away that willhelp
  2. collagen supplement. I used Adashiko because it’s not shellfish derived.
  3. micro needling. I bought a 1mm roller and rolled all over my stomach before moisturising after shower time
  4. secret saviours stomach band. These have little silicon grips on the inside which give your skin support. I didn’t bother with the add on products. Just the band itself.

I scoured all kinds of blogs and research and that seemed to be the common suggestions, so that’s what I went with

Ok, so my DM and DSis got stretch marks all over their baby bellies. I read somewhere ( this was 1999/2000) that a handful of sunflower seeds a day could prevent. I did this religiously and got NONE!
I also used Body Shop avocado body butter .

43ontherocksporfavor · 20/09/2023 19:24

I ate the seeds , just in case that wasn’t clear….

43ontherocksporfavor · 20/09/2023 19:25

Yes I had them on my hips from puberty too so I obviously am prone. I carried to full term + 4 too. Did same with baby no 2 and still none.
