Hi all,

I am roughly 8 weeks pregnant with what I now know is a non-viable pregnancy.

I had an early scan this morning at my EPU after being referred by a private clinic. I was scanned (abdominal and internal) by two sonographers and both said they didn't know what my scan was showing. They found the gestational sac but rather than being largely fluid filled, it was filled with solid tissue all the way around it with a thin slither of the typical black fluid filled area in the middle. A consultant and a doctor had a look and neither were any the wiser. They said it could be a failed pregnancy, a molar pregnancy (but they said it doesn't look like one), or an unknown mass. One of the sonographers thought it could be placenta gone wild. I panicked that it was cancer but one sonographer said it didn't look like a cancerous growth due to the uniformity of it.

They have asked me to go back for a blood test tomorrow because they took one last night and want to monitor HCG 48 hours apart. I just want them to get rid of whatever is inside me.

Has anyone had anything like this? I'm so scared.

Thanks @AnotherStory23 My hospital have told me it will Charing Cross I get referred to. Sheffield would be my preference because it's easier by car. I was reading threads on here about people getting admitted for 8 days to get chemo and it scared me. I know it's unlikely but so is having a complete molar and I didn't beat those odds so it feels more likely to me now. I think I'm preparing myself for the worst. I think you're right though, I just need to get through Thursday and then see what happens after that.

Sending you hugs op. Sounds very stressful & worrying. At least you sort of have a plan now & not on complete limbo.
Finger crossed for 3rd x

@Labyrinth86 I am currently under Charing Cross for treatment of a complete molar pregnancy. Post D&C they monitor bloods and urine every two weeks (you do this at the hospital most local to you and they send to Charing Cross) until HCG levels go back to normal then they monitor urine every two weeks - you do this at home and post it. I have never been to Charing Cross all communication has been over the phone or email and they've been very helpful. My levels went back to normal 10 weeks post D&C so I am being monitored for six months post first set of normal results and they have advised as long as they stay in the normal range no further treatment is required. I can totally empathise with the feeling of not beating odds believe me, I was so excited for this pregnancy after a MMC in September last year

@Labyrinth86 like other posters I am happy for you to PM me to talk about your experience. I found it hard because people had never heard of this we seem to be in a rather small but exclusive club but there are some incredibly helpful threads on here Molar pregnancy - story for others

Thanks @Beach11 😊

Thank you for sharing @hicketypickety That's good news about not needing to go to the hospital. I know that's the more likely outcome but I can't shake the worry that I will need to be admitted for chemo. I know I am jumping the gun though. I'm really pleased your levels dropped within 10 weeks! That's great! I hope I have a similar experience to you. Thanks again for sharing.

My D&C was postponed until today but it's all over now. I'm just waiting to be discharged.

After my op (about 2.40pm) I felt instantly better. I was famished and ate more than I've eaten in the past week and (as yet) I don't feel sick. I did lose a bit of blood but not enough to warrant a transfusion. Excited to go home and enjoy my weekend. I'll just have to wait and see what my next blood tests bring.

@Labyrinth86 Very pleased to hear this - have been wondering how you've been doing. I know I felt so great after my op to have that bit over and done with - and great to hear about your appetite! I hope you manage to rest this weekend and do some nice relaxing things.

Beach11 · 04/08/2023 21:23

Take it easy @Labyrinth86 & try to enjoy the weekend. Speedy recovery 💐

hicketypickety · 04/08/2023 22:44

@Labyrinth86 pleased to hear you're not feeling too bad after the D&C. Hopefully you'll hear from the hospital soon for your first set of bloods and urine. I have found the nurses at Charing Cross to be really helpful and they really give you the time of day.

Lilpop90 · 05/08/2023 00:27

Glad it went as well as it could and you have your appetite back! Rest up, wishing all the best in the coming investigations!

Labyrinth86 · 05/08/2023 11:22

Thank you everyone! I am really pleased to be able to eat and no feel full of gas/nauseous all day. I love not feeling on the verge of throwing up and not having to carry around a bucket with me. I'm sad that the pregnancy didn't work out but I'm so relieved to have had the suspected mole removed.

@Labyrinth86 how are you doing?

Labyrinth86 · 08/09/2023 15:52

@Skinthin Hey, totally missed this message. Thank you for asking!

I'm doing OK. I have been referred to Charing Cross who confirmed it was a complete molar pregnancy. I now have fortnightly blood tests at my local hospital which then get sent off to Charing Cross so they can monitor my pregnancy hormone levels and make sure they are dropping. So far so good. They have dropped from almost 300,000 to just 49 in 3.5 weeks. Still feels like a long way to negative (4 and under). Depending on how quickly I reach negative, they may need to monitor me for 3 to 6 months before I can try again. That's the worst bit about it.

If my hormone levels stay the same or start to rise, then that will indicate I need chemotherapy but hopefully it won't come to that. Only 10% cases of complete molar require chemo. Also, so as not to panic anyone, if anyone with a partial molar pregnancy reads this in the future the risk of chemo with a partial is 1%.

That’s a great drop @Labyrinth86 Hopefully you’ll be in the 3 month territory rather than six.

I really do understand the want to start trying again. My blood levels were at 5 8 weeks after surgery and they said if it had been 0.1 lower I would have been monitored for three months more but because it wasn’t I have to be monitored until Christmas so a bit of a setback and incredibly frustrating.

Labyrinth86 · 10/09/2023 13:24

@hicketypickety That's a bit rubbish - I'm sorry. I'm assuming you are negative now - congratulations!!! How many weeks did it take you to hit negative? :)

I am hoping that I hit negative in 56 days but atm avoiding chemo is my main priority. I would take a longer wait period as long as I can reach negative on my own. I'm terrified of being admitted to hospital 2 hours from my home and leaving my toddler for a week. Here's hoping it doesn't come to that.

hicketypickety · 12/09/2023 07:18

@Labyrinth86 my next set of bloods were negative so 10 weeks after surgery. When I spoke to Charing Cross they were really helpful and reassured me that the chances of needing chemo were slim still - and it sounds like your levels are going in the right direction!!

AnotherStory23 · 12/09/2023 11:00

So good your levels are already so low! It took me 13 weeks. My levels always came down but were really slow towards the end - if that happens, don't despair! They did decrease it was just the last few weeks where they slowed that felt interminable. But the woman at Charing Cross told me this was completely normal. And I found that after a period I would really notice a difference with the numbers; there would be a more obvious jump. So hard to predict with a molar, but everything sounds super positive for your. And if it helps I had my op last May and was pregnant by December (earlier than they advised I'll admit) and am currently feeding my 4 week old
