Having twins & freaking out!!

Just been for a 7 week scan and found out we're having twins. I am in complete shock, it hadn't even crossed my mind that twins might be a possibility!!

I know we are so blessed to be having one baby, let alone two, but I just feel completely overwhelmed about how we're going to cope.

Any twin mums here who can reassure me?? I am so worried about the extra financial strain, double the already very hard work when you have a newborn and i am fully panicking!!!

Me again! There was actually a similar post recently which had some great replies so I recommend scrolling back 😊 my best friend has twins and they have always been easier than my crazy toddler 💜🤣 honestly, they have been a breeze and she sailed through the newborn stage (they are now 3) ❤️.

You can get lots of great bits second hand (my friend did this) and you can apply for a Sure Start grant too to help out! Hopefully some twin mums can help provide some reassurance!

I had twins they were far easier than my singletons but I had to establish routines straight away. If one woke up the was deliberately woken to feed as well so they synchronised etc. The pregnancy will be higher risk though so make sure they put you under a consultant not a junior doctor.

My twins are now teens.
I still vividly remember that panicked feeling after my 6 week scan. However it was fine. I ended up with 4 year old and twins as a single parent (no other help). I remember waking up a few days after finding out and saying I can't change this so let's just get on with it.
A midwife who had twins told me do what ever you have to to get through, don't listen to what a singleton parent suggests (unless you think it is useful) and don't buy two of everything unless you need it. She was right.
Things that helped -breastfeeding was worth it in the long run, them sleeping together (they settled each other and I never once rocked them to sleep), tandem pushchair so I could get around the village, a sling in the house so one in sling one under arm and a spare hand, routine, wearing outfits more than once.
There were times that were hard - 9 months (were heavy to carry, couldn't yet walk and it was winter so I felt very trapped), nursery fees for two were costly so I ended up only working 3 days a week.
I encouraged all 3 dc to help tidy up from being little so it started as a game and became normal practice.

That said I wouldn't change it and they were worth the bad days. Best wishes the shock wears off and you'll manage.

Lol, this sound so much like a repeat of my experience. I'm 25 weeks right now but I have freaked out a few weeks ago and was actually seriously considering termination. Check my other posts

Some health issues aside, I'm nearing the end and really want them to come earthside safe and sound.

Hi I recently had twins they are now three weeks old and came out of nicu last Saturday. Since the first night they have been very content like other people have said when one wakes up for a feed and nappy change then settled back to sleep the other one wakes up for the same....wouldn’t know what to do without them now it’s a total blessing

coronafiona · 25/07/2023 13:57

Mine are now 10 ... they are absolutely wonderful. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. It's hard work and expensive but great. Congratulations 🥳

Glitterstars · 25/07/2023 13:58

I can imagine it being a shock, i don’t have experience of having twins but I can tell you that being a twin is the best thing ever. Bestie for life and the closest person they will ever have even when they are all grown up. My twin is my safe place ❤️

STH1988 · 25/07/2023 15:27

Thank you so much for the replies, I already feel a million times better. 💓

@enigma22220 i will check out your other posts, how are you feeling now? has the pregnancy been smooth otherwise? Best of luck for their delivery!

Maybe it is karma from my initial over reaction, but I have MCDA twins (same placenta but two sacs). I.e. much more likely to have complications.

Right now I'm stable but suffering from siugr type 2 and stage 1 ttts. No need for intervention yet but the twins will come early at 32 weeks maximum. I've resigned that my twins will spend weeks in nicu, but this will just be a small blip I'm the entire life. Not the easiest of pregnancy (I have hyperemesis as well) but just taking it one day at a time.

STH1988 · 25/07/2023 17:48

@enigma22220 poor you, hyperemesis sounds absolutely awful. I hope the rest of the time goes well and they arrive safe and sound 💞

Hi i am a first time mum to 7 week old twins boy/girl, i honestly love every moment! but as others have said definitely synchronize the feeding/changing i did from the very beginning and now they wake together and go back down at the same time. Accept any offers from family and friends you will definitely need the extra pair of hands. My partner had 4 weeks off work to start with so when he went back to work it was a shock and ive suffered a bit of mum guilt because i am FF i unfortunately have one crying baby whilst the other is feeding sometimes.

From my own experience dont double up on everything because you just dont use it, i went over the top and brought so many extras that i really didnt need. Life safer for me has been a tommee tippee prep machine but that depends on how you are going to feed. Good luck with everything, it may seem scary now and very overwhelming but honestly you will cope, you've got this!

Twimum23 · 14/08/2023 16:33

a double feeding pillow will be a lifesaver aswell my twins gunna be 6wks Saturday time does start flying past aswell they wasn’t meant to be born till 23rd

TwinMummaX · 14/08/2023 19:47

@Twimum23 can i ask do you find it easy to feed them both at the same time? Are you bottle or bf?

Twimum23 · 15/08/2023 06:13

I’m bottle feeding and yeah they are really good mixture of feeding at the same time but if one is awake I’ll feed him and then wake his brother up to feed and the first one will just fall asleep after his bottle so it’s a mixture really but the double feeding pillow does help I find

STH1988 · 15/08/2023 09:55

@TwinMummaX Congratulations on your twins!! It's so lovely to hear from other twin Mums. Thank you so much for the advice, as time goes on I am feeling less panic stricken and more excited 😆
