Induction, what should I do?

I’m just looking for some advice, I’m 37 weeks with gestational diabetes and I have an appt tomorrow with my OBGYN to discuss induction. I was told they wouldn’t like me to go over 40+6 (not me specifically just anyone with GD) but usually they do induce between 38-40 weeks. My GD is controlled with medication (metformin) and it’s been managed quite well. However, 3 weeks ago I did have a period of 2/3 days where my blood sugars would not settle they were quite high, this then followed by complete absent fetal movement which was so scary! I was monitored and everything was fine, I haven’t had anything like it since. I would love to tell my OBGYN to induce me as soon as, for one I’m over it now and sooo excited to meet my baby but also terrified incase my blood sugars go funny again and it causes harm to my baby. However the thought of induction or any medical intervention when baby isn’t ready to come scares me. What would you do? Would you refuse induction and let yourself go into labour naturally or would you want baby out ASAP to avoid any complications possibly happening? I’ll listen to my ob tomorrow to see what she thinks but I don’t want to opt for an induction and then be petrified up to the lead up of it. Also if you experienced an induction before let me know! Hopefully this makes sense i’m just really anxious about it all! TIA x

Where are you? I had GDM and was advised that NHS policy is to recommend an induction at 38 weeks, especially as my baby was measuring on the 97th centile. They definitely didn't want me going full term, never mind over.

I was induced at 38 weeks, was in labour for a day and a half and they realised that the baby had flipped at some point and was a footling presentation so I had an emergency CS.

The induction itself was okay though, I had a balloon inserted.

I'd also point out that you're already in receipt of medical intervention with the Metformin; this isn't the time to become too attached to the idea of doing things naturally. You have a couple of risk factors with the movement and blood spikes, so I'd probably listen to the doctor's recommendations.

I'm of the opinion better out than in once full term. Not has GD but both my girls had IUGR so was induced at 37 weeks. 2 hour and 1 hour labours.

Have the induction, it’s safer for baby and you. I was induced with my first. It’s completely fine. 💐

Me too. I also had GD. Mines was super long though. I was in Wednesday, gave birthday Saturday and was out Sunday.

I'm due to be induced Wednesday with our second as she's measuring slightly ahead (no GD) so I'm hoping it's a quicker process! 🤞 good luck!

I had one slightly raised hba1c and some slightly raised morning fasting readings when given a home test, but all other readings well within range even after a Christmas dinner etc! So mine was a bit odd but on records was down as GD. Growth scans all fine although at one point they did change their mind during the scan and went from 50th percentile to 75th and then following scans said baby would be bigger... But I knew these can be very inaccurate and baby was average when born. They said the same to me not past 40+6, booked me for a sweep on my due date. Turns out I needed induction a few days before that as waters broke and contractions didn't start, I had in my mind I'd probably accept the sweep but no actual hospital inductions yet I'd ask for daily monitoring and see how things go. I didn't want to be on labour ward so I'd decline the drip. However I ended up there with the drip and iv antibiotics anyway, I declined it for around a day and a half hoping contractions would start naturally but there was no sign. I struggled with not being able to move around much and the drip brought contractions with no break but after several hours of this I had an epidural and was able to relax yet still feel my legs and move, progress quickly and feel how to push and had a very short pushing phase with no interventions and a very smooth recovery. So all in all positive for me and baby. Best of luck for your birth
