Missed miscarriage

I was referred to the EPU last week after sonographer at private scan couldn’t see what he would’ve expected. So on Friday I went for transvaginal scan and they found that there was a baby measuring 6weeks+4, but no heartbeat. So I am waiting to miscarry. I am going back to the EPU on Tuesday and if I haven’t miscarried naturally I’ll be offered either medication or D&C. I am having some bleeding and light cramping, with very tiny clots. What I’m wondering, is will I definitely know if I have miscarried before then? And how painful have other people found this?

I'm so sorry you're going through this. You will know if you miscarry between now and Tuesday - you'll have heavy (or heavy ish) bleeding and potentially painful cramps, although how painful is very personal to the individual. I've just had surgical management for my second missed miscarriage, this time was spotting for about 2 weeks after baby died before the operation but my body just didn't want to let go.

@Vbro2606 Hi lovely, I’m very sorry for your loss and sending love.

I’ve had 4 miscarriages and they’ve all been different. Twice I’ve miscarried naturally before 8 weeks and they were both like a heavy period for maybe a week with just period type pains at the start (nothing personally that wasn’t manageable at home) that then tailed off - my practice ask you to do a home test a fortnight after the bleeding stops to check your HCG has gone down. In one of mine the test came back negative a week after bleeding stopped so I didn’t need to do anything further and the other I was still positive a few weeks later so they saw me at EPU for a scan to confirm all ok and it was.

Im not sure if you’ve been given the following leaflet from The Miscarriage Association about what to expect and types of management, but I found it helpful;

It does say they can be painful, but that wasn’t my personal experience before 8 weeks.

I have had surgical, medical and natural MC management so I’m happy to chat about experience/lend an ear if you need it.

Look after yourself x

Hello my lovely, I’m so sorry to hear about this.
I have had 2 missed miscarriages in the last year. I had no symptoms or signs of these and didn’t find out with either babies until my 12 week scans. First bub was 7+2 and second was 9+2. I had medical management both times due to phobia of surgery. You’ll know I’m not gonna lie to you, it was agonising for me but everyone’s pain threshold is different. I bled for about a month afterwards. Everyone is different though and I pray that it’s not too painful for you.

If you ever need to talk or vent just message. The emotional trauma from birthing a baby you’re not able to keep is the worst. You’re not alone. Stay safe and look after yourself ❤️
