Swimming in UK sea

I am heading to the beach for a week tomorrow and I am 34 weeks pregnant.

I’d love to swim in the sea which is about 17C at the moment. I’ve not swam in cold water during the pregnancy.

Has anyone done sea swimming while pregnant? Was there any issue with the baby or any concerns mentioned?

I did ask MW but she was unhelpful. She said it’s totally fine just don’t swim in water that makes you catch your breath. But the UK sea does that all year round!

😂 It's fine.

You laugh but tbf the midwife kind of said don’t do it. But kind of said did. So I don’t even know anymore.

You'll be fine for a dip. Don't push yourself to stay in because the bump is less insulated than you.

When you get out, get warm dry clothes on quickly, warm up from the inside (hot or warm food/drink). Do not have a hot shower as this will chill you.

I had been sea swimming all year round for about a year and a bit when I got pregnant, I kept going and baby was born in January! I just didn't stay in as long as I usually would. My midwives said it's ok to continue what you are used to

of course it’s fine, I’ve been cold water swimming throughout pregnancy. Just don’t let yourself get really cold

Some beaches along the North East coast have been having issues with sewage being released into the water, so perhaps check first before swimming. You can do that here:

I would say avoid also, not because of the cold but because of the sewage.

Agree with pp - sewage is the biggest concern here especially after the recent heavy rain. Surfers Against Sewage maintain very detailed maps of sewage alerts so check these carefully before you go.

Check for sewage and go for it. 17 isn't cold!

MasterCherry · 22/07/2023 21:43

Sewage is grim, so avoid that. But this time last year I was enjoying the (cold!) sea as the only place where I could move reasonably freely, not feeling so weighed down by the enormous bump. It was lovely!

Traceyislivid · 22/07/2023 22:04

I went in a wet suit at 5/6 months pregnant. It was great 😊

Traceyislivid · 22/07/2023 22:05

In the west of Scotland I should add during summer. Bracing.

Al991 · 22/07/2023 23:57

Thanks all, can confirm we are sewage free here. Haven’t been in yet, but perhaps going to test it in the morning and see how cold I feel!
