Uterine artery pi notch?

Due to my first being born slightly small for gestational age, I have had extra scans booked in for 32 and 37 weeks.

Im 20 weeks 3 days and have just had my 20 week scan, all fine and had the uterine artery Doppler check, where I was told as both readings combined are under 2.5 it is fine, however looking at the report, each individual measurement is really high off the centile chart at 1.14 each. Is this normal?

I have absolutely no idea how to interpret this, despite googling.

I’m concerned because my sons birth weight flagged me for aspirin, but consultant said not to worry about taking aspirin as he was so borderline, and we’d do this check and the extra scans instead.

My consultant scanned me last week and found bilateral uterine artery notching. However same thing that the average pi is within range and they will keep an eye on it (the masurements individually werent recorded). My daughter was SGA and this baby is already measuring small too. I'm not allowed to take aspirin and told consultant I'm fine with injections as an alternative but she was happy for me not to and is scanning me again at 26, 30, 34 and 38. I'm just trying to trust that the consultant knows what she's doing and they are keeping an eye on me.
Sorry I don't have any advice/information to share but just wanted to let you know you're not alone in it all :)

measurements 🤦🏻‍♀️

randommangoandpear · 21/07/2023 12:25

@JD90 stressful, isn’t it?

The sonographer said mine are normal due to the combined number being under 2.5, but individually they’re off the charts so I’m actually worried! I haven’t been booked in for any further scans or appointments because of this… maybe I should have?

Oh, I assume “no notch” is significant but it doesn’t mean anything to me. All I’ve read is how higher readings like mine are strongly associated with negative outcomes!

No notch is normal, notching can be associated with difficulties.
When working out the mean pi there are actually more calculations taken into account than just those 2 numbers, so you just need to try and trust what your doc is saying (Easier said than done I know). If you're worried then I'd try and contact them either through email or phone the secretary and ask if you can arrange for the doc or one of the team to contact you and explain what these measurements mean more in depth. Google is distinctly evil during any kind of health situation, especially pregnancy where you'll be finding yourself worried about bub too. Hopefully the stress will ease for you a bit.

@JD90 ive called the midwives asking for further clarity.

I can’t find anything positive about these type of numbers at all.

That's the best thing you can do, ask the people who know what they're looking at. I hope you manage to get some reassurance from them. 🤞

@JD90 I just spoke to a sonographer who said that although they’re “higher,” they’re not high enough to be in the high risk category. She said if they were over 2.5 combined then id be offered a scan at 28 weeks, but I’m having one at 32 weeks anyway.

According to her everything looks normal for now.

Google says the complete opposite :(
