PRIVATE Growth Scan has set me worrying?

Good afternoon,

I'm 33+5 and went for a growth scan this morning. Apparently he is weighing 4lb11oz which for anybody else would be perfectly normal. However my babies have all weighed around 6lb at 34 weeks and my growth chart with the NHS indicates he should be over 600g heavier.

I'm now worrying because he's gone from the 90th centile to the 3rd centile. I'm not sure whether to get in contact with the local midwives?

It wouldn't hurt to contact your midwife. It's probably nothing but best to check.

Also 6lb at 34 weeks is very big, how big were they at birth? All mine were 6lb 9oz at 39 weeks!

sae3005010 · 20/07/2023 14:25

They were 9lb7 and 9lb15 at birth! That's why I'm worried because if that is the case, he will be barely 8lb which is a huge difference in birth weights. My midwife prepared me for another 9lb-10lb baby, so it's come at a bit of a shock for me. She's also put my water levels are normal but she didn't even check, nor did she check my cord. I think I made the wrong choice paying £90 for a growth scan.

Aren't they notoriously inaccurate later on in pregnancy.
Mine was predicted at 8lb 9oz at 38 weeks during a medical scan. She came out 10 days overdue at 6lb 7oz 😳

Growth scans are wildly inaccurate, especially when they are done by different sonographers.

I had one 10 days before giving birth and estimated baby was 7lb something at that time. He was born 6lb7oz.

My daughter measured in the 20-30th percentile for everything and then in a private scan they measured her head at like 7th percentile. i freaked. when i went for an nhs one is was 23rd percentile. they are not very accurate.

She was born at 34+1 weighing 4lbs 11oz and was 20th percentile so wouldn't think that's a bad weight

  1. They’re only accurate about 1/3 of the time.
  2. Different sonographers often measure differently, as do different midwives when measuring fundal height.
  3. I’ve had 2 LGA babies and one ordinary sized, all healthy, just different.

Would you guys fork out the extra money for some smaller outfits? I got up to 12lbs because I expected a 10lb baby. 0-1month is up to 9lb. I'm not sure what to do. My gut says he's not going to be small but I obviously don't know. I think he will be around 9lb13oz.

I'd say trust your mama instincts, ask for placenta and cord flow to be checked maybe so you're reassured it is still working and I'd say up to 1 month will be fine and lovely 😊

HippeePrincess · 20/07/2023 15:02

Get some small ones right near then end and keep the receipt so you can take back. I thought one of mine would be small and he came out nigh on 10lb a week early and I only had newborn and up to 1 month in the bag. They didn’t fit.

Wobblyheart · 20/07/2023 15:43

Hi - I know you are worried but I think there is most likely no cause for concern howeverI would definitely contact midwife / MAU just to confirm that all is fine.

I had a stalled growth during my pregnancy and he went from 90% percentile to 40% - i was monitored but they werent concerned as they also plot numbers on a chart specific to your parameters rather than comparing to all women. Also, some privte scans arent very reliable, depends greatly on professional. If it is something like window to the womb I would want that to be rechecked. Your MAU could help organise an ultrasound to check all okay.

I thought the reason the NHS don’t routinely do growth scans is because they’re notoriously unreliable? Those scan places often don’t have professionals, I’m very sceptical of them for causing unnecessary stress, id never use them. But definitely contact your midwife

I was scanned at 34 weeks exactly and my baby was 4lb 7oz which is normal weight statically for this stage in pregnancy according to my midwife.

But growth scans are wildly inaccurate.

My 1st was said to be 5lb 10 at 36 weeks and was born at a tiny 4lb 2oz at 37+4.

My 2nd was said to be over 7lb at 36 weeks. She was born at 7lb 6oz at 41 +1.

I don't think they're very accurate at all.

My son was born at the 0.1percentile and is classed as IUGR. My daughter was 36%.

This baby is at 49%according to my scans.
