Travel to france

I’m in the UK and going to france for a few days (provided I get sign off from consultant / midwife) and I’ll be 35 weeks pregnant. My travel insurance covers for giving birth (just in case but hopefully not), but is there anything else I need before leaving? I don’t think I can apply for a UK EHIC anymore does this matter if I have insurance that looks to pay for everything? Please no opinions on whether or not I should go I’ll be listening to the midwife etc! Thank you

Do you have gestational diabetes? I had it and had a couple of holidays booked in my third trimester. Unfortunately I had to cancel them as I was a high risk pregnancy so couldn't fly, and my insurance covered birth but not complications from GD. However I was travelling further than France so maybe if it's Eurotunnel etc it's fine

You should also get a GHIC (new brexit version of the EHIC). If you’ve left it too late to get the physical card there’s apparently a way you can download some sort of certificate instead, google can no doubt find it for you.

I do have GD so not sure if I’ll be able to go but will prepare for the trip just in case anyway. Thanks re GHIC I thought now with the EU withdrawal we couldn’t get this but perhaps different as global?

GHIC is what you have now instead of the EHIC because of the EU withdrawal. You definitely still need it, as well as the insurance.

How are you getting to France? If by Ferry they are unlikely to accept you at that gestation.

I went to France by car / Eurotunnel at 36 weeks. It was fine if a little frustrating not being able to drink all that gorgeous wine and cheese. Enjoy.

Hi, I hope you don’t mind me asking. Who did you manage to get insurance with to cover giving birth? I can’t find any that will cover after 32 weeks. Thanks

Gestationaldiabetesannoyance · 20/02/2024 19:13

of course not. It was through crispin speers ans partners

hope that helps!
