Cyclizine

I started Cyclizine on Friday for nausea and really struggling with the drowsy part of it.I’m trying to get a doc appointment to see if there’s anything else I can try that’s non drowsy but it’s taking time to get appointments. Yesterday morning I thought I’ll try having it at 4am and so by morning I may be a bit better which did help a lot. However this morning I have been so groggy & just foggy headed.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to make this work better or from experience did the drowsiness subside after some time taking it? I’ve only been taking one tablet.

Thanks

I found the drowsiness only lasted a couple of days then it went to the usual pregnancy tiredness.

When did you start on them? I’m in my 7th week and wondering if it’s mix of everything. Have spoke to reception today they said they’ll put it forward to the doc and see what they suggest.

I have the same issue with Cyclizine. Really can help with the nausea and vomiting but once I've taken it I know I'll be out for the entire day. As in, I will sleep about 18/20 hours a day. I feel like a zombie. Doctor prescribed Xonvea to see if this would work any better. Again it's great for the sickness but has the same effect. I think a lot of these antisickness drugs can make you drowsy. I'm waiting to hear from my GP as to what else I can take.

For context, I am about 8 and a half weeks pregnant and been suffering from nausea and vomiting for the last 2.5 weeks.

It’s horrible isn’t it 😫

I hope you find a suitable option and removes the drowsiness.Let me know how you go.

It’s just not ideal is it. So hard to function when nausea is 24/7.I had the same for first pregnancy but didn’t know there was help available so just suffered with it. I thought I’ll try this time as I have more commitments & really don’t want to feel this way for so long again. It’s so debilitating. I haven’t had sickness & I hope that stays at bay.

Are you off sick from work? I asked about getting a fit note but they said I got to see the doc first which is frustrating as it’s hard to get an app with doc 😫

Yes I was signed off for a week and just waiting for the doctors to sign me off again... I work in an office but work about 50 hours a week which I just can't handle at the moment with the exhaustion and sickness. I barely have the energy to look after myself, I just feel like a zombie.

Has your doctors surgery got Econsult online? Every time I want to speak to a doctor I fill out the online Econsult form and they normally call me back within the day, especially as it is pregnancy related. Saves you phoning up at 8am every morning trying to battle with everyone else for an appointment!

I hope you manage to get things sorted soon. It really is a struggle and I feel your pain!

Gosh yes can’t imagine doing that when hit with this.Be sure to rest up & do what you need to to try and get some relief.

They don’t have the online service unfortunately.I had a text through to say they can’t change meds without another appointment so I’ll have to try and sort this this week 😫 took me 3 days last week before I got an appointment out of hours.

I freelance and have had to cancel some work but also work part time at weekends. I rang in sick this past weekend but now would need a sick note for this upcoming weekend if I’m still this way. That’s also stressing me out.

I have hyperemesis gravidarum. Nausea started before I took a pregnancy test. Sickness began a few days later. I am now just over 12 weeks. I was originally prescribed cyclizine. It was making me drowsy, dizzy, couldn’t even look at light. Stopped taking it and tried a few others - one making me even more sick than without. Hospital is my second home and ended up on drips countless times.

My last visit to hospital they gave me the injection version of cyclizine (ouch) but worth it. At this point I was retching at drinking water. I had it in my system to enable me to take tablets. They then told me to take the cyclizine tablets for 4-5 days and the side effects should ease off. That is true. I am still taking them, less drowsiness and dizziness. I am now feeling nauseous and being sick again though. The sickness is mainly sticking to the am, around lunch onwards I am mostly able to keep things down. Hope this helps.

Gosh this sounds like a lot - I do hope you are feeling a bit better soon. My head hasn’t been as groggy this morning after I took it at 4am so I’m hopeful it’s a turning point.Time will tell I suppose. Are you off sick?

I ended up only taking it in the evening so
the tiredness didn't cause an issue, but I was absolutely wiped. On a couple of days I had to find the first aid room at work and go for a nap.
I'm now 12w+2 and haven't taken them for a few days. Nausea has been materially better so hopefully light at the end of the tunnel for you.

i found fresh air and plenty of sleep makes a big difference to my nausea but obv that's not always possible.

3rdtimemumma · 26/07/2023 05:37

I've had hg for 2/3 pregnancies. On 3rd pregnancy, I started taking cyclizine before I was pregnant, at night, just once a day. It meant I got used to the cyclizine and the sickness never really got going (less than 10 episodes of sickness this whole pregnancy, previously 20-40 times per day). Not helpful for you now, but if you decide to have any more. Also, pregnancy sickness support charity are brilliant. Throw any questions their way. Lots more options for pregnancy sickness now compared to 8 years ago (when i was pregnant with first). And yes, cyclizine injections are a lifesaver when you can't stop vomiting at all. Good luck.

3rdtimemumma · 26/07/2023 05:43

Also, cyclizine doesn't make me as tired after 16ish weeks as think it's partly pregnancy tiredness. If you need time off work, just take it and don't feel stressed/guilty- you are ill, whether or not you're pregnant, you shouldnt need to carry on. Stress makes my sickness much worse (when pregnant this time so much less stressful than vomiting on floor/ bin etc at work), so just try to relax and let your body recover.

NorthernExpat · 26/07/2023 07:01

had cyclizine (and later a range of second and third line drugs after it stopped being enough) and found the trick to managing the drowsiness was to take it really consistently every 8 hours. If I was late with a dose then I would get overwhelmingly sleepy, but if I could keep the level constant I didn’t really notice it.

hope it gets better soon for you. I remember feeling awesome once it finally went at 6 months - I went hiking by myself and will never forget the surprised looks followed by beaming smiles as my bump came into view over a stile!
