Scared to buy maternity wear

Nemo145 · 08/07/2023 10:05

Currently 8+4 and had a successful scan yesterday.
This is my 7th pregnancy but I only have one child.
My belly is already growing and I can’t fasten my jeans.
Due to 5 losses I’m scared buying maternity clothes will jinx me somehow. I know this is totally irrational.
I only registered my pregnancy after yesterdays scan as I’m so worried something will go wrong again.
HELP!

I’m sorry for your losses Flowers
Maybe get a waist extender? Different types are available but just for example

I felt the same way and I haven’t had such a complex journey as you - I didn’t buy any proper maternity clothes until 20 weeks!

Maybe just buy some essentials a size or two up- there’s absolutely nothing to be gained by making yourself uncomfortable. Tell yourself ‘these are for my comfort’ rather than the pregnancy, if that helps. Xx

I feel the same, I probably won't buy anything until 12 weeks. Could you just buy comfy non-maternity clothes by going a few sizes up? 😊 Then they aren't maternity clothes, they are just oversized - perfect for weight fluctuations! 💜

It's great news your scan went well, hopefully this little one will continue to hang out 😊

Like a PP I haven’t had a complex journey like you have but I have been exactly the same throughout pregnancy. I didn’t buy any maternity clothes until around 25 weeks and actually I still only have 2 pairs of maternity jeans and that’s it.
You’re lucky because it’s summer, so really I’m just living in summer dresses that I had in the wardrobe. Leggings for cooler days with an oversized shirt. I second waist extenders for jeans too. On the m and a website you can even filter trousers by ‘elasticated waist’ which again has loads of flattering non-maternity options.
Good luck OP I really hope the stress and anxiety starts to melt away as time goes on. I’m now 37 weeks and only just bringing myself to buy baby things, also out of slight fear of ‘jinxing’ it.

I was the same, and just wore a lot of summery dresses with no waistband until about 20 weeks - I didn’t even tell my mum until about 16 weeks.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I was the same, I didn’t buy anything until meaty 20 weeks for fear of jinxing things after multiple losses.

I found that the bloating I experienced in the first trimester did go down again at around 14 weeks and I was able to manage in my old clothes until 20 weeks.

If you don’t want to buy maternity then maybe just get a couple of things in the next size up so you’ll be comfy until you’re happy to get some maternity clothing.

I just wanted to come on and say I totally understand. I am currently on my 8th pregnancy and have 1 child. This pregnancy I avoided maternity wear until recently. I bought a couple of dresses that were the next size up, similarly elasticated (sorry style/fashion) trousers. They’ve got me to 20 weeks with ease. Wishing you lots of luck.

Blue2020 · 08/07/2023 13:57

I bought a size up jeans from about this point, then two sizes up at about 12 weeks. Thinking if it didn’t work out again I could probably use them in the future. By 16 weeks I realised I couldn’t just keep buying the next size up and finally got a pair of maternity jeans.

By postpartum it was spring and I had a C-section so now I live in elasticated leggings two sizes up that sit over/on the bump. So if I was ever to go through pregnancy again I would go straight for these next time since they are comfy at different waist sizes and still are.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions.
My daughter was born at 25+2 so I never really got round to buying anything with her. I didn’t even have a bump till about 16 weeks.
@Blue2020 you make a good point re after a C section, I know I’d have to have one and I remember last time struggling for things to wear after.
Maybe I’ll be brave in a few weeks and buy something.
I’ve another scan at 10 weeks, so I’ll hold out till then.
Being in Lancashire the “summer” weather isn’t always dress weather.
Rationally I know buying these things makes no difference to the outcome.

I really appreciate people’s comments.
