Does anyone know if this cake looks like it may contain raw egg? It’s NHS 75th birthday cake my hubby brought home for me so it was part of a massive cake I think.

Can I eat this cake?!

  1. Why on earth would victoria sponge contain raw egg?
  2. Even if it did, if it's made in Britain that's fine as all eggs are red lion so safe.

"The current Food Standards Agency advice is that it's safe to eat raw hen eggs during pregnancy, as long as they bear the British Lion mark". All commercially sold eggs are lion marked eggs. This means the chickens have been vaccinated against salmonella.

The original mixture may have contained raw egg but it has been cooked since then so will be fine.

Strawberry06 · 05/07/2023 17:49

Sometimes icing can be made with raw eggs is my reason for asking!

The icing looks split ,it was probably made with cheap baking margarine, it should be still ok to eat..

Spottybluepyjamas · 05/07/2023 17:52

All UK eggs have to be red lion stamped, so can be eaten raw everyday if that tickles your fancy...

veryfluffyfluff · 05/07/2023 17:55

Icing isn't made with raw eggs is it? I thought it was egg free..this is bad news

Strawberry06 · 05/07/2023 17:56

@veryfluffyfluff it can be yeah. I know I make a gateaux that uses icing made with raw egg white. I took it into work once and made a point to tell the pregnant lady it contained raw egg!

That icing is 100% artificial. It's never been near an egg.

Strawberry06 · 05/07/2023 17:59

@TwoLittleDucks22 😂 thankyou!

Is it not that fake cream stuff you get?

waterlego · 05/07/2023 18:00

It’s usually royal icing that contains egg. That isn’t royal icing. (Even if it was royal icing, you’d be fine- see previous posts re British eggs).

Hollyppp · 05/07/2023 18:11

Eat the cake! Looks fine to me

(From a fellow pregnant woman)

PickledScrump · 05/07/2023 18:15

If you don’t eat it can I 😂

Kidssendingmenuts · 05/07/2023 18:23

If I had that when I was pregnant I wouldn't even question it and would shove it in without it touching the sides!

nocoolnamesleft · 05/07/2023 18:26

How come you got NHS cake? I didn't get NHS cake! 25 years plus working for the NHS and no bloody cake. Sulks

Getting back to the point, looks fine to eat. Does not look like icing with egg white in it.

Peony654 · 05/07/2023 21:22

I’d eat that! As others said, eggs with red lion stamp can be eaten raw

veryfluffyfluff · 05/07/2023 21:24

You can tell its NHS cake coz of the portion size
