6/7/8wks - Horrific bloating & Constipation

So unfortunately. Had problems with slow sluggish digestive system before being pregnant but I took a daily med for my ADD (Elvanse) which is a stimulant med and as a welcomed side affect helped my digestive system function normally.

Well now I’m pregnant the dreaded constipation has kicked in into overdrive, I can’t take my ADD meds (unproven but advised not to take during pregnancy). And I literally feel 5/6 month pregnant like a penguin even though I’m small framed because my bodies full of toxic waste I can’t expel 😣

tried the sachets you dissolve into water.. nothing.

Any advice anyone?

Congratulations btw!

The constipation will pass, it's horrible though. Eat plenty of really ripe pairs, they make a huge difference x

This was me - it alll came to a head one night at about 3am, woke up with stabbing pains and felt like I was giving birth on the loo as a weeks worth came out (tmi, sorry).

Anyway what worked - religiously having 3 litres of water a day
A proper coffee every couple of days to get things moving
weetabix
Fresh fruit smoothies (try and get mango)
Snack on kiwis
dried fruit is supposed to be good but I can’t stand it.

Good luck!

Think you can take lactulose too, check with midwife first, congrats!

Chia seeds. A couple of tablespoons stirred into a glass of water and chugged back before they all swell. Drink in the evening & by morning things should move.
2 x kiwi fruit a day, including the skin, is also a good gut cleanser. They contain both soluble and insoluble fibre when you eat them whole.

Thanks so much! Off out to grab the kiwis. Have some
chia seeds in back of cupboard (hopefully they’re still in date! 😅)

Thanks for this. Will work on these. Coffee does nothing for me sadly. Will get a proper food shop in tomorrow and get into a regimented meal plan to try get things going. Much appreciated

Yet to even get a midwife appointment. My GP’s a joke, have just registered with a new one. Have had to shell out for private scan to confirm pregnancy last week. And got another tomorrow to check things again. Had missed miscarriage the other year and no full term pregnancy, this will be my first if all goes well. But when finally get appointed a midwife will speak to them about that, Thankyou

I found a magnesium supplement was helpful in avoiding constipation! I just took it when I was very constipated and was able to go the next morning!

For the very tough times, you can get glycerol suppositories if you speak to your GP or a prescribing pharmacist- not the nicest thing to do, but might be good to have a clear out every now and again.
I do sympathise- prone to it anyway before pregnancy, and still bunged up at 25 weeks I'm afraid!

I've got a load of psyllium husk tablets that I got as part of a package of preconception and pregnancy vitamins from zita west. I didn't need them preconception but have started taking them now and they definitely work. Unfortunately i have enough to last me for an 18 month pregnancy!

Peony654 · 05/07/2023 14:33

I’m taking lactoluse in small doses - I haven’t seen midwife yet but NHS website says it’s fine in pregnancy, and pharmacist said the same when I bought it. Otherwise, prunes, dried apricots, chia seeds, lots of water. Try some yoga poses for bloating
