Had a scan of my cervix today and it's measuring to short so seen doctor and was advised that it's better if I get stitches in or I risk losing my baby am 20 weeks +3 days as anybody had this? Am so scared a don't want to lose my baby have to go to hospitol tonmorow and have the procedure really nervous about being numb from the waist down can this not harm my baby?

I haven't had this but work in obstetric theatres and we do this for women fairly often. The numbing of the waist down is the safest anaesthetic for a pregnant lady and will not effect your baby. Baby will be exposed to much less drugs than a general anaesthetic. Minimal amounts cross the placental membrane for a spinal anaesthetic.
The midwives will monitor baby before and after. Generally it's more risky to not have the stitch put in but I know it's terrifying ❤️ great that it's been identified, hoping the rest of your pregnancy is more straightforward!

I had a stitch at 22 weeks - I was so nervous and scared but it was absolutely fine, no pain and I was convinced by the doctors that the drugs couldn't harm the baby.

Take some time when you get there to talk through your anxiety with the doctor. I bet they’ll be so reassuring.

This a stupid question but I haven’t missed some kind of cervix check have I because I didn’t know I this was a thing? (22 weeks.)

Hope the appointment goes well.

I had this during pregnancy (I hate the term 'insufficient cervix') however I was offered either a stitch or daily pessaries until 37 weeks. I went with the pessary and all was well

If you've had it already then I hope it went well for you

It's typically offered to women who are having regular (fortnightly) cervix scans to check the length, which is due to previous cervix surgery. Ie if you've had abnormal smears or cervical biopsies or LLETZ procedures (where they burn a tiny amount of your cervix away to remove abnormal cells).

A dear friend of mine had stitches in two pregnancies, went to 40 weeks + with both (after the stitch was removed at 37 weeks, I think, in each case) and the babies are now healthy teenagers.

I know it's scary but it's a reasonably 'routine' procedure. Good luck. Flowers

Hope all went OK @Babynumber3xx

Hello, sorry for jumping on here. Hope it all goes well for you. How did you arrange a cervix scan? I've had quite a chunk of my cervix removed from lletz and I'm worried about this, did you discuss it in your booking appointment? I'm currently 9 weeks.

Mine was arranged after I had my 12 week scan at the hospitol it was on my notes due to previous issues with my smear tests xx

It isn't a routine thing hun I have had 2 babys before and never had it done it was because of issues with my smear test after them pregnancys which resulted in me needing mine looked at xx

What is the length of your cervix at the moment?
I had shortening with my daughter at 22 weeks last time.
I am pregnant again now nearly 18 weeks and haven't had a stitch but progesterone pessaries seem to be keep my cervical length stable x

Had it in the last 2 pregnancies. All went well, I thank the NHS every time I pray, for the health and safe arrival of my 2 youngest daughters. Both are now teenagers.
All went well and a close eye was kept on both the pregnancies due to the loss of a premature baby at birth previously.
Wishing you a safe pregnancy. It really was the best choice of treatment. I know a couple of other people who had it done. It went well for them too.
