Hiya ladies,

I'm currently struggling with this horrible unbearable rash which decided to spread over my body.. I'm 35 weeks)
If you have had/have the same I have a few questions for you...

  1. Did you find a cure? A remedy that worked and gave you almost 100% relief?
  1. If so what did you use to lessen the intense itch?
  1. Did you continue with your day to day lives? (I'm unable to even wear clothes for too long) How did you cope?

I also don't understand why midwives and doctors have never heard of this rash if its so "common"?

There’s an old thread with remedies.

i am trying pine tar soap. Antihistamines aren’t working, neither is steroid cream or aquaderm.

No one knows what my rash is either, but it is clearly PUPPPs.

My section is due next Thursday, but I am going to ask to move it forwards and I will shred myself to death.

I hope you have got some answers and let us x

@SimaM Hi Sima, thankyou for replying! My section is due in 2 weeks, lucky yours is upcoming sooner! I've luckily almost rid of my rash, it's been almost weeks! the steroid cream and piriton from the hospital did nothing.. here is what I've used so far!

-Coconut oil with a few drops of 100% tea tree oil
(Worked to stop itching, help moisturise skin & it's a natural antioxidant)

  • Calamine lotion & cream
(Stopped the itching..but only after shower)

-Pine tar soap..
(Leave on for 3minutes whilst under cool-luke warm shower)
Should dry skin out and make temporary less itchy until you moisturise

I hope this helps xx

Using all of those remedies, but the itching won’t go away, it only subsides it for a short while and comes back angrier.

i am waiting for the out of hours GP to call as my swelling looks like cellulitis. Although, the A&E doctor said it wasn’t on Thursday, I disagree. I’m in agony. I’ve asked to move my section and the hospital said the list is full. I’ll lose my mind and end up being an emergency at this rate.

I am so annoyed that none of the obstetric team know what this is. It’s clearly not uncommon at all.

@SimaM unfortunately the only cure is birth then it will disappear with a few days to a week afterwards! Just try and keep positive! They are only temporary relief remedies but they will have to do for now just try not to scratch as much! My hands were absolutely coveted before! Just google natural antihistamines and try find as many remedies as possible if you can! I know you feel being in hospital will help but trust me once you are in you wish you would have stayed home! Have a nice cool shower

Oh God yours is as really bad. I am glad the remedies have worked. Using dandelion root tea and about to have hot tumeric and milk.

I don’t want to be in hospital, I just need to deliver this baby yesterday. Legs are so swollen they can’t even bend. I’m basically disabled.

I have asked to my steroids ready too. I am not waiting to start the treatment. I want to have my skin back for skin to skin.

Goof luck xxxx

Gosh you have my sympathy- I had this with my last (twin) pregnancy almost 20 years ago and it was horrendous. I tried to get in the bath for relief - it didn't help and I got stuck. It went soon after the delivery but awful while it lasted. I was covered from the chest down. I'd never heard of it at the time, and the GP didn't tell me what it was, just prescribed useless piriton. It was only afterwards that I found out online that it was PUPPP .

Missguidedsmiles · 09/07/2023 09:21

@SimaM mine was literally all over my body including the soles of my feet!the only places it wasnt was my back and above my neck!
I've heard good things about dandelion and tumeric! There's even a wild tumeric paste which is supposed to be great!

The key to getting rid of this rash is consistency! I've been lathering on pine tar soap in a luke warm shower 2-4 times a day for 2 weeks! The difference really creeps up! But it works!

Consistency is key!

Count the days! And keep using as much relief as possible

@not4profit

How long after the delivery did you notice is had disappeared? I know some people say it can last up to 2 weeks after!
The doctor said the cause is basically an allergy to the hormones and histamines. 70% of ladies who get this carry boys.. and it's more common is ladies carrying multiples! Or having a larger percentile baby (such as myself 97th)
I've found most GPs and Midwives (suprisingly) have never heard of this but Google says its so "common"..

Mine is all over my whole body too. I’ve had a shower this morning and will have another when I feel it creeping up again. I told the medical professionals about the soap so they can actually recommend it to other poor ladies next time. We should have to read mumsnet for this.

I am literally counting down the seconds now!

SimaM · 09/07/2023 10:07

I’ll update you post birth. I am asking for steroids straight after birth as I’m not breastfeeding.

I meant shouldn’t on my last message x

I had this with my first pregnancy 8 years ago, it was horrendous. Midwife sent me to hospital for blood tests and monitoring. While I was there I was scratching so much I was bleeding. Hospital midwife took one look and said I couldn't carry on like that, got me in to see the consultant. I was admitted straight away and given steroid injections for two reasons: one to prepare baby's lungs in case they had to deliver me early, and two because it might stop the itching. If it hadn't worked they were going to bring my section forward and deliver early (they said they would bump somebody less urgent if needed). As it happened, it did help the itching. Doctors said it would likely be temporary so they planned the section a few days earlier anyway. Glad they did because the itching came back the day before! I'd tried all sorts of creams, sprays. Spent a small fortune. Thank goodness it tends to only affect first pregnancies and that was the case for me. No sign with my second baby.

not4profit · 09/07/2023 16:03

@Missguidedsmiles
I'm afraid I can't remember exactly but I would say it was probably a couple of weeks but getting better gradually every day. Yes my pregnancy was twin boys!

No one took it seriously at all (once the more serious cause of itching, obstetric cholestasis was ruled out). It was very upsetting at the time.

SimaM · 09/07/2023 19:56

I’m strangely glad I’ve had PUPPP as it gives me more knowledge to pass on to others, including my daughter.

People always tell me not to tell first time mums my horrid birth story, which I think is so silly. Knowledge is power. My daughter knows her birth story and so will this little boy.

I found that not having on all the creams helps as it gives me somewhere to go when I do itch. Having all the creams on isn’t good for the skin either. I also slept most of the day to save myself the hassle of being aware.

I wish more midwives and obstetric doctors were aware and far more sympathetic.
