Hello all, I had my 16week midwife app today which I think went well no concerns on her behalf. Also had a call from a consultant who told me I need to have extra scans as they are concerned baby is going to be small. She said that because I had my daughter 19days early and she weighed 6lb 4oz it was a low birth weight so there is a high chance this one will be the same ( i never had any problema in my pregnancy with my daughter who is now a happy 7year old and never had any health issues). I actually asked my midwife today if there was a chance I could have this baby early because I did with my daughter but she said no it doesn't work like that and there's no reason to think I would. Has anyone else been in this position?

Thankyou :)

I will now be deleting this thread as even though I've followed my midwifes advice im still being judged for smoking before I even knew I was pregnant. I've followed every bit of advice to keep me and my baby safe.

My reason for this post was to try and understand why the consultant thinks my daughter was low birth weight and I need extra scans this time around. I understand smoking in pregnancy isn't good which is why as soon as I found out I cut back massively and can see that from the results where you blow into the machine. Midwifes are more than happy with my progress. No one is perfect and I'm sire like me once people find out there having a baby they will do there best to stop

I didn't mean my post to sound at all critical of the smoking. I wa simply highlighting it as a tick box on their form that means you're now eligible for the extra scan.

Personally I took whatever scans I could get but I had my own health issues and risk factors.

I don't think people are judging you- just explaining this is why you've had the extra scans offered

Have you looked at the list of risk factors for an SGA baby? The RCOG guideline is easily googleable and has flow charts with the risk factors/suggested interventions. You've said you've had one on the 10th centile and you smoke/d. Those are both risk factors. It may be that you do/don't have any others. It's great that things look good at the moment and hopefully things will carry on looking good. The medical team's job is try and predict/prevent where problems may arise - that seems to be all they're doing for you doesn't it? If you feel that their suggested interventions are not what you want then you can decline.

I've read through all the posts and updates. I think maybe you're reading into it a little too much. It doesn't sound like the consultant expects there to be any issue with your baby. But with your first being a little bit small (statistically), and you having been a smoker which can impact baby's growth you have obviously hit the criteria for needing extra scans.

I also hit the criteria in my second pregnancy due to a couple of issues in my first. I went along and it's a bit of reassurance everything is well. I always just saw it as, at least if something is wrong they will pick it up and hopefully resolve it.

All the best x

Not judging, just saying that smoking is a legitimate risk factor, before and during pregnancy, so scans may actually be advisable.

I've had growth scans with all 3 of my pregnancies because my babies always measure small, my second was born in the 3rd percentile, he's healthy he was just small at birth. I'm pregnant with my 3rd and this one's measuring the biggest of the 3 so far so they're not concerned. I don't think you have anything to worry about I would just take the scans, I like getting them, it give me peace of mind as I can see the baby is developing well
