Delivery at 37 weeks - induction or section?

My waters broke this weekend at 35 weeks, I’ve been in hospital for two nights having steroid injections and antibiotics and they’ve booked me in for an induction for the day I hit 37 weeks if baby doesn’t come of her own accord first, however I’m unsure whether to go induction or ELCS.

I had an induction with my daughter, which wasn’t a great experience (that’s an understatement) but did work. she was born via ventouse delivery and I had a second degree tear, episiotomy and I’d say a bit of birth trauma. It took 36hrs from start to her being here.

My reasons for considering an ELCS this time are:

  • calmer, nicer birth experience to counteract the last one!
  • less time away from my DD (I’ve been in the induction ward this weekend and some people had been there over a week and they kept hitting pause on inductions because delivery was so overwhelmed, though this is counteracted by the fact that I would go through as a priority - still imagine there’ll be quite a wait though!)
  • I feel like there’s probably a higher chance of ending in section anyway as it’s so early (though my body has done it before)

my cons are:

  • recovery with a two-year-old at home
  • I believe being born vaginally is better for baby’s lungs, especially when early (but in contrast, would an induction be more distressing for baby)?

The hospital has told me they would do one gel then I’d go on the list to go down to delivery, where they’d break my waters and put me on the drip. I think at this point I’d ask for an epidural - I did it on gas and air last time, which was fine, but the drip is meant to be really quite painful, especially so early!

What would you do? I’m so, so confused. I’m changing my mind every two minutes! Any insights very welcomed. Thank you.

Honestly, after having a failed induction the first time, I decided to go for a vbac the second time failed to progress, went on the drip for a little while and then ended up with a emcs again, I really can't fathom why I didn't go straight for a c-section.

My first was born at 37+3 via emcs, he coughed up a load of mucus and flem about 12 hours after, which scared the life out of me at the time because no-one told me to expect it, and then he has been fine ever since .
My second went to an emcs at 38+1 but because the failed induction took so long we both had infections and he had to go to SCBU for a couple of days.

As long as you've got help at home for the first week and 1/2 I'd go for the section over a second induction any day!

I had an induction at 38 weeks. I only needed the pessary and didn’t need assistance. It was 31 hours from pessary being inserted to baby being born. However, the ward overwhelmed and it wasn’t great. As soon as my contractions started they were regular. My contractions started at 11am and I couldn’t get on the delivery ward until 5pm so I only had access to paracetamol at that point. They kept saying I was on the list but other people were ahead of me and I couldn’t go down. When I got to delivery I was a lot further along than they thought and excluded other pain relief.

The steroids you’ve been given will be developing baby’s lungs. It’s done if there’s a risk of c-section before 39 weeks and so if they are already prepping you for it, you should be in a good position.

Hi OP. I had the hormone drip with DD and opted to have the recommended epidural which failed , I won't lie the contractions were very painful and constant and ended up with an EMCS I opted for a elective C Section next time and it was a breeze! Only one night away from DD, I bonded much quicker with the baby as no birth trauma and the recovery was fine despite a toddler at home ( but I do have a good support network which helped).

Thank you so much everybody. I had an appt at the hospital today, at which they wanted to book my induction and I requested a section instead. It was signed off very quickly and now I’m just waiting on a date. Thank you all for your input, it’s really helped with what felt like a really difficult decision but now it’s made, I know it’s the right one for me (as scary as some of the forms were!) xx

Amazing news @SkyBlue20 Wishing you a beautiful, calm birth. Don’t forget for your birth partner to bring their camera to snap the moments. We have some wonderful pics of DD frost coming out and of DH cutting the umbilical cord x
