22 weeks & anterior placenta

This has probably been done to death so sorry if it has!

I’m 22 weeks, have an anterior placenta and have felt intermittent movements for the past 3 weeks maybe? Nothing that has any real pattern that gives any reassurance. We had our 20 week scan last week and everything was fine, I was even surprised by the movements however baby was behind the belly button for most of it. I can feel movements daily usually and then have the odd day (like today) which I don’t feel much. Is this normal because of babies positioning? And how would I know when to be concerned?

It is concerning, isn't it? I don't actually know if I have an anterior placenta this time as I'm 19 weeks and not had my scan yet. My midwife did question it though, as she had trouble finding the heartbeat at 16 weeks.
I had an anterior placenta with my 3rd and remember not feeling my baby much at all around this stage, so have been reassuring myself that all was well then too. It will get much easier to feel baby very soon for you 🤗

I have an anterior placenta and am 32 weeks. Starting feeling movements at 21+5 and my baby still does not have a recognisable pattern. It can be quite worrying! I have been into hospital 4 or 5 times for reduced movements but every time the baby has been absolutely fine.

Hopefully your baby's movements will get more consistency as they get bigger, as happens for most people. But it's impossible to predict! At the 20 to 25 week stage I tried to be happy with feeling a movement in the morning and evening

I'm also currently pregnant (26+4) and have an anterior placenta. I didn't feel ANYTHING until 21 weeks or so, not a flutter or anything.

Then, like you, I felt things every now and then and it took me a week or so to be certain it was even baby. All I can say is don't worry too much. I know feel him quite regularly (daily) and we have a pattern but that's only been the last 2/3weeks and I'm almost 27 weeks.

IF you still aren't feeling much as you approach 24 weeks then mention it to your midwife but you'll be surprised how quickly and suddenly those small movements pick up.

I'm coming up to 21 weeks and have an anterior placenta. I mainly only feel her when she seems to be using my bladder as a trampoline. Some days hardly anything at all. Got my 20 week scan today. I've had quite a lot of scans as I'm under a recurrent miscarriage clinic and she's always been very wiggly in those.

Hi, I had anterior placenta with my first. Regardless of placentas positioning, at this stage, you would not be expected to have a pattern to baby movements. I think it's now 28 weeks where they start encouraging you to monitor for consistency but I could be wrong on that. However, within the next couple of weeks you would be expect to feel the baby every day.

I found that up until about 36 weeks, my baby's movements would be very different in terms of strength. Some days I felt virtually nothing. I had to be sitting in a certain position to feel them and really focus. However, for this reason, I went to the hospital to check reduced movements on a number of occasions as it was impossible to know what the cause was and the risk wasn't worth it.

I would strongly encourage you to discuss this with your midwife at your next appointment for expert guidance but if you're ever in doubt go to get checked. They are happy to reassure you. The worst that'll happen is that you might feel a bit overdramatic if all is well but I felt that was more than worth it on off chance that something had been wrong.

Hey,
I have an anterior placenta and only this week (week 34) have I felt / seen strong movement. I found it really hard seeing my friends movement in comparison, especially as they could almost grab little feet and limbs!
If you're ever worried, please just go into Triage, I've been in twice for reassurance and they're SO supportive!
22 weeks is still too early for a pattern of movement, but hang in there!

Thank you for all the comments! It has definitely put my mind somewhat at rest! I definitely have felt more movement this week but they also seem to have the odd quiet day as well! I will definitely mention this at my 24 week midwife appointment which is 11th July. Sometimes the movements feel faint like normal tummy ones so I can see how I am sometimes missing them!

Hi @Glitterb I don't have an anterior placenta, but am also 22 weeks and wanted to just say, at this stage I feel kicks as well as internal movements. So it's defo normal to feel things that are 'fainter' at this stage and can sometimes feel more internal. I'd actually say I feel more internal movements than kicks to the tummy at the moment.

Al991 · 29/06/2023 08:38

This is definitely completely normal. I wouldn’t start to worry until 24-25 weeks and even then could just be flutters.

Glitterb · 30/06/2023 07:22

Thank you all! I will definitely discuss with my midwife at my 24 week appointment.
Having anterior placenta makes it so much more frustrating as I can understand the baby moves behind it and obviously movements are then hard to feel!
At what point do you need to be concerned?

I'm 22+3 and have an anterior placenta and have only felt him 'bubbling' for the past week. There's no routine and nothing in particular that sets him off to kick me (I know some say raise your blood sugar, do some exercise etc etc) but he just runs to his own timeline. I was super concerned about not feeling him on any type of schedule and everyone said to be worried if I hadn't felt him etc and I hadn't so I was flapping but my midwife reassured me that it's due to his positioning and the positioning of the placenta.
If you have a concern yourself, I'd just go and get checked out regardless of whether anyone says 'don't be concerned until xx/xx/xx'

xx

@mamalauren thank you! Who knew an anterior placenta would be such a nightmare eh!

Some days I can feel a lot like they are spinning around in there and kicking, and some days I wake up and just know they will be quieter/fainter movements as usually my bump feels different as they have moved! I’m hoping to speak to the midwife on Tuesday regarding it, hopefully when the baby gets bigger it will improve!

No worries @Glitterb. They def keep us on our toes! For sure when baby is bigger we'll all be getting kicked in the ribs and all sorts. 😂

Glitterb · 05/07/2023 16:40

@mamalauren I’m hoping the anterior placenta helps out at that point!
