Private pregnancy scan/miscarriage

Hi everyone

  1. I have pcos but a normal BMI. I'm really worried as I read online your 3 x more likely to miscarry if you have PCOS.
  1. I had a ultrasound (transvaginal) to assess pcos (didn't know I was pregnant at the time) around 5 weeks after LMP in which the sonographer did not see anything/fetus in the cavity and said my period should be imminent.
  1. I did a clearblue test 7 weeks after LMP which was positive and showed 2-3 weeks on indicator.
  1. My NHS scan is not for another a month so decided to book private one at which point I will be 9 weeks since LMP. This is my first pregnancy.
  1. I've only had mild pregnancy symptoms bit of nausea (no vomiting), fatigue, tenderness and back pain.
  1. I'm really worried about this private ultrasound I will be doing at 9 weeks, as my the scan I did at 5 weeks did not show anything, I have pcos so higher risk of miscarriage and only mild pregnancy symptoms. So really worried about miscarriages.

I would really appreciate anyone's advice.
Thank you

Fellow pcos-er here and I had mad anxiety when I found out too. People here were kind enough to remind me that worrying wont change anything. Focus on being kind and good to yourself in the present and if the baby is meant to come, it will. Easier said than done I know, but that is precisely what is in our control right now. Enjoy this period for now and I’ll let more experienced mommas here comment on the ultrasound and timing bit.

Thank you, was your pregnancy ok?

Did you track ovulation, and are your cycles irregular? If you don't know when you ovulated then you may not be as far along as you thought which would explain the scan not showing anything.

All I'd say about the scan coming up is that it'll help you know where you are up to, it'll give you information as a snapshot. I find it easiest to take it as a medical appointment, and I'm just going in to find out facts (I had a missed miscarriage before so I try not to get too emotional thinking about scans!).

I have pcos too. I had a scan at 7 weeks from LMP but only measured between 4-5 so they couldn’t see anything in the sac. I’m 15 weeks now and baby has been growing consistently at around 2 weeks later so they think I probably ovulated later than I thought

hope it works out okay for you!

If the cb test said 2-3 weeks that's 5 weeks in nhs terms. Which means at your first scan you would have been 3 weeks along (I'm assuming here you ovulated later than you think) in which case it makes sense they couldn't see anything. It's likely you'll be able to see something, hopefully a heartbeat, at your next scan which will actually be 7 weeks.
I have irregular cycles (suspected pcos) I ovulated on day 38 at the start of this month and I'm now pregnant. Nhs has me at 8 weeks tomorrow going by lmp but I know I'm 4w5d because I'm sure when I ovulated. With pcos it might be likely your cycle was similar?
I totally understand the anxiety, I hope you are able to take it a day at a time. I've had a miscarriage and it's hellish but unfortunately there's little we can do to prevent it. Try to look after yourself as best you can.

LMP means little with pcos unfortunately!
I fell on a month where I do not ovulate till cd22 therefore just over a week behind where the drs would put me.

I also don't think it's a blanket for all. When I researched it's mostly the increased testerone that may cause miscarriage and also occasionally insulin resistance . So it will depends your type of pcos / current levels etc . Although I am not a Dr!
What symptoms do you usually have?
