Where to get tested for cervical incompetence ?

Sorry a random question but I’ve had 3 early consecutive miscarriages and currently 10 weeks preg. I’m paranoid about cervical incompetency and I’d like to get this checked out when I get to 16 weeks. I’m trying to find on google where to get tested for this but can’t find anything. Does anyone know ? Or do I just contact a gynaecologist?

I was exactly the same as you after two losses, kept jumping from one phobia to another as the pregnancy progressed and there was definitely a stage where I was very scared of cervical incompetence. I think you could get a private scan where they would measure the length of your cervix once you get to a certain stage? Done as an internal scan. With no history/reason to believe you have it, I don't think the NHS would check it x

Thx for your reply. I did email window to womb asking if they can do internal scan if I book a private scan at 16 weeks but they said they won’t after 10 weeks. Will keep searching !

Window to the womb are not insured for cervical measurements as I tried to book that myself with them.
You need to find a private independent sonographer or go private.
I am having regular nhs cervical measurements due to early shortening and dilating previously - so I think you need to have had that previously before they can refer you on the nhs x

I know some private clinics offer cervical length scanning, I think it's just a matter of enquiring and booking one privately. I had one at around 18 or 19 weeks I think, just because I was paranoid after two consecutive miscarriages, and all was fine.

@Lillybobs86 i don’t think nhs will refer me as I had a healthy pregnancy with my 4 year old and no symptoms of cervical incompetence. (I read there are no signs of cervical incompetence anyway unless someone has suffered loss after the first trimester then they will test this for you ). It’s frustrating as I know other countries test for this as a routine. I do have cervical ectropion but probably nothing related!. I will keep searching!

@DappledOliveGroves im the same I’m paranoid and thinking of everything. I’ve emailed the secretary of my previous gynaecologist to see see if she does it

I also agonised about this and did loads of research on it in my pregnancy. I ended up being phoned by a consultant who reassured me that the only way the NHS would check it was if I'd had two LLETZ treatments for cervical abnormalities. Is there a genuine concern that you have as to why it would be incompetent? Cervical erosions are very normal and just basically a tiny surface issue!

If you do go ahead then I found a company called ultrasound direct that I could book this check with from 16 weeks.

I never ended up having mine checked and my first daughter went to 42 weeks!

Lillybobs86 · 22/06/2023 13:24

@TTCxox why are you worried you may have early shortening if your previous pregnancy was normal?
I had previous shortening which is why I qualify for nhs regular checks but I would keep searching for someone private if you are worried.

Thanks both @peachesandsweets and @Lillybobs86

Im worried because the thought of having another miscarriage just terrifies me. I couldn’t cope if I could’ve prevented before it’s too late . I know.. I’m paranoid! I did have a c section (although planned as he was in breach position). Now I’m also paranoid they will say something will be wrong with my placenta at my dating scan. Thanks for recommending @peachesandsweets about the private ultrasound . I managed to speak to my gynaecologist who said she will do it once I have my dating scan and once I reach 16 weeks if I decided to get checked out

I understand that - I think once your brain has focused on something you just can't let the "what if" go - and feel like you have to do it.

Glad that your gynaecologist has offered some reassurance and sending all my best wishes for a good pregnancy for you!
