Hi,

So, I popped into Tesco to grab a free bite and one thing led to another and I eventually had a basket full of items.

I've come home and I'm experiencing mild period pain type cramps.

Can lifting a shopping basket cause a miscarriage?

I'd be gobsmacked if lifting the basket had any links to the cramps. You haven't done anything wrong.

No. But if it was heavy it could have pulled your already stretched muscles or ligaments

BCCGoAway · 20/06/2023 22:29

No. Usually I would get cramps when I was a bit dehydrated. Are you drinking tons of water?

justasking111 · 20/06/2023 22:32

No. But your ligaments are a pain now. Weird feelings all round. Your organs are being shuffled around to. Ugh I don't miss it at all.

Think about all of the stresses women's bodies are put in all over the world and throughout history, pregnant bodies are tough.
Miscarriages are very sad and most are caused by the foetus not developing properly, they really aren't likely to be caused by a basket of groceries. You've most likely pulled a muscle.

I hope the discomfort eases soon.

No, absolutely not. But if you are worried about your cramps and they persist, maybe give your local maternity assessment unit a call. They’d much rather check you over and give you reassurance than have you worrying at home.

No. I was deadlifting 80-90kg throughout my last pregnancy.

Shopping baskets are awkward to carry, as it's one sided, so you've probably strained a ligament or something

BoohooWoohoo · 21/06/2023 08:40

No. Poor women around the world wouldn't be having children if that were true.

Baskets can be unwieldy and muscles easily hurt so take care.

No, it won't be related. Imagine every women with a 2-3 year age gap between their children, having to regularly pick up their older child while pregnant. I would imagine like others have said it's just ligament pain, take it easy. 👍

Lifting has nothing to do with miscarriage. It is recommended to avoid lifting in pregnancy because the hormones loosen your ligaments so it is easier to injure yourself.

Do you think other pregnant women don't lift their own shopping? Other children??
