Beta blockers and elective c-section?

Has anyone had or planning to have a c-section while on beta blockers? I'm only on a very low dose but I'm worrying how safe it is. Consultant said it's fine but I can't help but worry 🙈

It's absolutely safe but depending on why you're on them, you'll be monitored for the effects of them on your heart rate and blood pressure for example. Is there anything in particular you are worried about?

I’ve been on beta blockers for my BP for years and had a section on my first baby with no issues at all. Is there something in particular worrying you OP?

I was prescribed labetalol for pre-eclampsia in my last pregnancy, which is a beta blocker, and had a c section so imagine the combination is very common. But if you’re worried you could ask to discuss with an obstetric anaethetist as they’ll be the ones monitoring your blood pressure and heart rate during the section?

@AfterGlow87 Sorry for my delayed reply 🙈

I think it's because I've heard the spinal anaesthetic can lower your blood pressure. But so do the beta blockers, and I don't want a double dose of lowered blood pressure 🙈

I'm going to ask at my pre op what they want me to do though. I'm on more of a fast acting beta, which works in around an hour and lasts 6-12 hours. So ideally I don't want to take it just before the op but also don't want to skip taking it for the day. So I'll need to know their opinions x

The spinal can lower your blood pressure yes, but as long as you mention you're on that medication to the anaesthetist that you are seen by at your pre op appointment, then they can advise whether to omit the dose on the day of the surgery or if they are happy for you to continue as normal.
If your BP does drop in theatre, you will be given IV medication to raise it as well as IV fluids.

It’s not a problem at all. In fact abruptly stopping a beta-blockers is more likely to cause problems.
