If you had gestational diabetes, did you get it again ?

I had it in my second pregnancy, I'm pregnant again just 8 months post partum.
I know the chances are higher once you've had it anyway, but does anyone know if those chances get higher with another pregnancy so soon?

I’m 7 weeks pregnant, my son has just turned 3 and I can already see that i have it as I’ve been using my old monitor to test my levels after sugary foods the last couple of weeks, they’re nearly all high so yes you can get it again.. don’t know how likely it is but it’s worth testing yourself after high carb meals

nowayhomer · 20/06/2023 19:54

Didn't even think of testing myself !! Would it show up this early??

I didn’t get it again with my second pregnancy.

nowayhomer · 20/06/2023 20:26

@Whiterose23 that's good to know. Did you have any risk factors ?

OP posts:
Whiterose23 · 20/06/2023 21:07

I have PCOS and a strong family history of diabetes. I was convinced it would come back and very surprised when my tests came back normal.

afinethingindeed · 20/06/2023 21:11

Yes I got it again. Like PP, I was testing early. I think I started getting highs from around 14 weeks and was officially diagnosed just before 16 weeks.
My friend didn't have it again though, so it's not guaranteed that you will have it.

Catlover10 · 20/06/2023 21:24

I’m a member of gestational diabetes uk in Facebook and some people on there have been diagnosed from as early as 6 weeks, but think it’s more likely the further along you are. You might as well start testing yourself a little bit!

nowayhomer · 20/06/2023 21:25

They test earlier don't they if you've already had it ? When do they normally test if doing it earlier does anyone know?
My risk factor is pcos

I had GD with my dd 7 years ago. I'm nearly 20 weeks now and had my routine test yesterday - positive :(

LavenderSweetPea · 20/06/2023 22:09

Where PCOS is a risk factor, I was advised to take infolic alpha (or another Myo insitol supplement) to reduce the risk of GD

mightymam · 21/06/2023 00:15

Yes. Diet controlled first time and insulin towards the last week with the second.

Mistymeow · 21/06/2023 08:14

No I didn’t get it the second time, even after 3 GTTs! I wouldn’t test using an old kit unless it’s been calibrated as it can give inaccurate readings.

nowayhomer · 21/06/2023 13:58

Thanks everyone.
@Mistymeow can you not calibrate them yourself ?

So I had a chippy (it was horrible wish I never bothered) checked my sugar levels an hour later and they was 8.2

Yamaya · 21/06/2023 20:15

That is too high isn't it? Found a picture of my old log with the limits on it.

I had GD second time around. They asked me to start doing one or two tests a day from 10 or 11 weeks. Was OK until about 18 weeks, then GD began to show. Was on metformin both times, but seemed slightly worse second time, close to going on insulin but baby came early.

nowayhomer · 21/06/2023 20:26

@Yamaya yeah too high, not massively so but it is for 5 weeks lol
My test after the birth was all normal though apparently

Yamaya · 21/06/2023 20:31

Probably best to speak to your doctors about it sooner than later then.

Fleur405 · 21/06/2023 20:33

I had it in my first pregnancy (undiagnosed until about 34 weeks). I didn’t have it in my second.

nowayhomer · 21/06/2023 20:35

I'm going to start testing more regularly now, see what it's doing

Hi OP.

My DD is 15 months old and I'm 33+2 weeks pregnant.

I was diagnosed with GD at 34 weeks with my first and so far I don't have it. I was tested at 16 weeks and then again 26.

However .... I am carrying extra fluid so I have an emergency GTT test tomorrow.

I don't feel like I have it tbh. Keeping everything crossed!

Gingerwright · 21/06/2023 20:47

Try inositol? There is some evidence that it can work to help prevent GD. At worst it's harmless, cheap, and has no side effects.

I have PCOS and take inositol anyway to regulate periods and help with weight maintenance, but carried on taking it through pregnancy because of the possibility it could help prevent GD. It's worked over three pregnancies so far, but obviously I'm a sample size of one 😆 Google the research for better sample sizes!

Evenstar · 21/06/2023 21:26

I had sugar in my urine and had to follow a low sugar diet with my eldest, I was never tested at all in my subsequent two pregnancies, though bizarrely they tested my 10lb 11oz DD to see if her blood sugar was OK. She unfortunately has PCOS and has been on Metformin for several years.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that at 58 I have just been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, there is no family history and I am wondering if this may partly be a result of gestational diabetes that was not addressed. I am doing a very strict low carb diet and would advise anyone to take this seriously, I am very close to being diabetic.

Mistymeow · 22/06/2023 22:18

@nowayhomer I think you can calibrate it yourself (you could Google the brand to see how to do it). However my old glucose monitor was definitely faulty as I used the test solution and it came back with a high reading. I’m glad I realised as I would have ended up being treated unnecessarily.
